I think his kicking might have improved you know. It’s the lowest bar possible to clear but he seems to have developed/been coached a move to give himself a bit of space.

It has got better, it's not scattergun now.

Massive save that. I know we conceded anyways shortly after but I really would have feared for the mentality of the team if they scored that pen and we got screwed over again. Helped add to the overall defiance of bowing down to them that justice was served with the save.

They seemed happy to go back to him a lot more tonight. I was not quite as comfortable as them watching. Especially when he had a touch or two

It seemed a bit more aimed at a general area and not just spooned to nobody or straight to the opposition. I can only remember a couple of bad ones out of more kicks than usual.

Seems to take an early touch now when ball is passed back, rather than before wait an age for it to come (taking steps back) which invites pressure and he slices it. Takes a touch now to move it a bit right to give him an angle and composure.

Like you say, low bar but something simple that’s working for him.

People thinking we can spend £30/£40m on a massive upgrade on him are going to be left disappointed.

Besides I'd rather the money was spent elsewhere on the pitch.

You probably can. But you can also spend £100m+ cumulative on several goalkeepers that don't cut it.

ID'ing great goalkeepers is hard. Very few are the complete package - maybe just Allison. The best is Courtois imo but he is just about ok with his feet. Likewise Donnarumma - just about ok.

I know he's on massive wages but I do think PSG thought they could upgrade Donnarumma with the Chevalier lad. So far, he's not looked up to scratch. To the point he was benched for a clown.

He's been much better since he came back into the side, last night he was excellent. For all Ramsdale wasn't very good when he came in, I do think the spell out of the team and the spotlight has helped Pope because he was making too many errors earlier in the season and it seems to have allowed him to reset and refocus.

I think the approach with GK should be to scout more of a development player with a high ceiling. Surely we can find one of those.

Is that because they are super tall? :aww:

I noticed it helped massively that Elanga woltemade and Willock were always jumping for headers off his kicks which often led to the ball dropping to one of our players to get at them.

He is going to be really hard to replace. Mainly because, the things he is good at, there are not many better than him around.

So obviously we would be looking to get someone who can improve on his weaknesses. But whoever that is will likely have their own weaknesses that will reveal. Abit like when Ramsdale got in the team, sure he seemed a little more comfortable with the ball at his feet and he did really well in the shootout. However what we gained we lost way more in his lack of command on corners/crosses, his reluctance to come off his line despite our defence being set up for a sweeper keeper and his general  shot stopping felt inferior.

So to try and get someone that is superior to Pope, that we can a) afford and b) would want to join us ahead of the usual suspects, is going to be difficult.

Someone like Trafford with the hope he would develop here for many years did seem like the ideal scenario.

With all that being said, I do wonder if I am being incredibly harsh because i didn't think it in the moment but having seen the replays, i just wonder if he could have moved just that bit quicker for their goal and got something on it. Probably not.
