Pretty certain never had any interest in coming up here and that's fine. Not every footballer is going to be sold by the project/club/city. I understand a lot of people don't like London but I totally get the appeal for a young footballer with certain priorities over others. Not the end of the world, there are players out there that can still improve our team and the window is still young.

I prefer a technical creative flair type of player with decent pace. One that can be really effective against teams that sit back as well as against the better teams. We will have to evolve to progress even further. Have more versatility as a team in general. Diaby is good but I don’t think he is the one for us. He would also cost a bomb. We definitely need another player who can open teams up and score crucial goals in big games. I agree though Diaby will be too expensive.
Super Duper Branko Strupar
I like Maddison and he's clearly very good, Im not at all unhappy he's not coming here, though. Hard to put my finger on why.

TheBrownBottle
The obvious has happened, then I’m extremely dubious that we were genuinely after him after last summer. We made a bid, Leicester wanted a shitload more, that was that. Leicester would have happily watched a ‘bidding war’ if we’d even been remotely interested this summer. An awful lot of people have set their heart on a player who can’t get past Trent Alexander Arnold in England’s midfield …
JLC
I'm really disappointed, have to be honest. Would love to have signed him. If Kane leaves though that will reduce his potency massively. Anyway, next !
Joey47
I think it came down to wages in the end. I’m glad we didn’t give Maddison the wages he’s going to be on at Tottenham. Edited June 28, 2023 by Joey47
aussiemag
I don’t think he’s got the physical attributes to be a starter in our system. He’s built like a teenage boy with no shoulders and isn’t exactly quick. He would have helped against the low press sides with his passing and shooting, but plenty more fish in the sea. TorchyTBB
Really not bothered. Decent player, but I just couldn't see how he would fit into our team and work ethos.
TheBrownBottle
6 hours ago, Matt1892 said: Why Spurs moved ahead of Newcastle for Maddison Harry De Cosemo, BBC Sport Newcastle United were long-term admirers of James Maddison, having made two bids for him last summer. But he never quite fit either of the two priority positions the Magpies want to strengthen in midfield. Their main target was a deep-lying midfielder in order to free up Bruno Guimaraes to play higher up the pitch and they are closing in on AC Milan's Sandro Tonali, with an announcement expected imminently. Adding another option on the right of their attacking three is next on the list, as well as a left-back and a right-sided centre-back. But with such a hefty outlay on Tonali, they are likely to take stock before another big move because they are conscious of Financial Fair Play regulations. They expect to make two big-money signings this summer, looking for value elsewhere. Maddison operates more as a number 10. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is a huge fan and targeted him specifically, but with the player keen to go where he was wanted, the first move was crucial and Tottenham reacted quicker. RB Leipzig's Dominik Szoboszlai is of interest to Newcastle, albeit not at the price of his £60m release clause. BBC Sport has been told the German club expect him to depart though, so that could be one to watch. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/newcastle-united That’s where my thinking is.
