Now That's What I Call Transfer Rumours! 7

Great thing about having Bruno is we can sign either a 6 or an 8 and know Bruno will be dynamite in the other position.

If we do sign a holding midfielder and push Bruno forward then for me it's imperative that the new player offers the same passing ability from deep that Bruno does. Hugely important to how we've played this year IMO.

100%. I still don’t really want us to sign a holder unless they have a tremendous engine and can cover side to side (essentially making up for displacing Longstaff/Willock/Joelinton’s legs) in exchange for Bruno further up field.

£35m would seem a bit extreme for someone to probably be understudy for the next couple of seasons.

Obviously there’ll be a lot more games in Europe comes about, but you’d still be wanting Trippier on the field for all of the big ones.

You could possibly get Benjamin Pavard for that much money

I’d rather we looked at players that can cover the midfield roles like Bruno does,  than sign a specialist holding midfielder who offers nothing else than to sit in front of the defence. Having a player that can alternate with Bruno up and down the pitch would be magic.

When did the term number 6 become used over number 4?

I remember reading something about it being to do with when tactics shifted massively to 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 and away from 4-4-2.

Still, the more defensive minded midfielder has always been 4 and always will be, for me. Don’t really get why formations would make a difference?

Maybe a European thing? I remember Klopp referencing ‘the 6’ a lot. Then all the hipster journos and statto types using it all the while.

Not for me. Brexit means Brexit!

Safety smiley

Trippier will be 33 towards the start of next season. The club will want to gradually phase him out after next year I reckon, and move him to the bench/coaching. I can’t see him being first choice RB at 34/35, no matter how great/important he is at the moment.

He’s likely to be one of the best right backs in the world in the next couple of years, he’s that good.

Never thought of them as the same tbh.

A 4 is Batty, Kante, Makelele

A 6 is Pirlo

Same position, different type of player. At least to me anyway

According to whoscored he starts every week for Lyon so it is a bit hard to imagine unless Trippier's phasing out is going to start a lot sooner than we think.

Scouting him? Sarsfield haven’t played since Oct and their next game is 28th Jan. I’m sure they (like many top clubs) are already aware and will be keen like us, but the media headline is shit as normal.

Alot of discussion about this on other threads over the years

This is why it makes sense to me;

                   1

   2         4        5          3

        7         6           8

       10        9          11

Obviously that's for a 433 formation but you see my reasoning.

Genuine question - given the way we set up and play these days and assuming Bruno is always one of the first names on the sheet . Where would a defensive midfielder for into our team?

Fit? It’s known that the club bought Bruno to play him further up the pitch but have been hampered with this plan by injuries and lack of alternatives. A more defensive minded midfielder would allow Bruno more freedom to hurt the opposition, rather than sitting on the edge of our own box at times.
