If we're still in the same place, rightly or wrongly, I think it's reasonable to assume there's going to be an outpouring of anger aimed at him at some point during the Liverpool game. Unless in the very unlikely event Eddie comes out and says specifically not to chant about him or it's held in until the end like at Villa, expecting nigh on 50,000 people to weigh up the negatives and be measured in the proverbial heat of the moment would be expecting too much I think.

 

How that effects things in the background I have nee idea.  Probably not do us any favours in terms of bringing him back in but it's ganna happen and chances are it will be loud and vociferous.

If he outright refuses to play for the season then more fool him. It's a short career and he has his first World Cup next summer, so there's 0% chance of him sitting a season because he didn't get his own way.

 

Probably won't see him until after the international break though.

I'm not sure that's true is it? The fee is amortised across the length of the contract so if Tonali was £50m for five years, that £10m/year (plus wages, bonus) is still going to be on the accounts each year until he either leaves or signs a new contract.

Yeah its not the specific fees that drop off, rather the season's loss. This year we lose the minus £72.9m from 22-23, and next year we lose the minus £71.8m from 2023-24. So should be healthy for the next season or 2.

That's not quite right, the 22/23 buys (etc.) still count towards our PSR spend in the same size chunks as when we first bought the players. E.g. Isak = £60m divided by 6 years = £10m this year, same as it was in 22/23. It'll be £10m next year and the year after too, if he's still here.

 

The only thing that really changes that is new contracts, which re-divide outstanding amount of money by the number of years on the new contract (so our payments have gone down on Gordon because renewed his deal, but Isak and Botman will remain the same at this time).

He was on the Football Daily, the BBC Five Live podcast getting stuck into Isak last night.  The incredibly annoying presenter, who always tries and fails at being funny.  Seemed to be leaning into the broken promises from NUFC, almost defending him striking.  Whilst caveating it with "we don't know what's gone on".

 

I know they have to try and play devil's advocate up to a point.  But it still seemed like a ridiculous viewpoint.

Eddie Howe responds to claim Alexander Isak told him in May he wanted to quit Newcastle United

Alexander Isak reportedly told Eddie Howe he wanted to quit well in advance of this summer's transfer saga

 

Howe was asked if he feared that Isak would not be available for the Champions League campaign on the day Newcastle clinched qualification back in May, despite a 1-0 defeat by Everton.

 

Howe told reporters: "Trust me, when that final whistle went, that (Isak leaving) was the furthest thing from my mind.

 

"It was just a feeling of relief really because we were hunting that prize all season.

"We were in and around it after a really good run in December. I was not thinking of any individual in that moment, so I can’t really give an answer on that.

 

Howe's comments suggest that he is being more than genuine on Isak's situation and any early warnings that the striker wanted to quit.

Isak himself stated in a Press conference back in March that he intended to sit down with the club to discuss a new deal.

Howe was then asked if he thought that Champions League qualification helped assure him Isak would not leave and pour cold water on transfer talk long before Liverpool placed a bid for the Sweden star.

 

Howe said: "It was not dependent on Alex. My thinking was not just on one player. "Qualification was important for the squad in general. We have some outstanding players who want to play and compete in the best competitions.
 

"So certainly, I had a feeling that would help us keep the majority of the squad. I’m sure we have players coveted by other clubs so that is a big part of what we need to do on a
