I watched Bradford/Bolton last night and it dawned on me that we played Bradford this season. Not even right at the beginning either; it was our seventh game.

It's not natural like. I love football, my friends and family would probably say I'm obsessed with it, yet this is all too much for me by like 50%

Probably a different story if we're winning but i felt like this in 23/24 as well, it was a pure slog.

I was fucking knackered with football when that International break came along in March.

Wondered when you'd show up again

Where are you staying in Istanbul?

Let's hook up for a few before the match and sing old Villa songs from the 80s. I know you still have that David Platt poster on your bedroom wall.

Hope the football gods in Scotland have been watching reruns of the Liverpool v Arsenal game on May 26th 1989

That will surely mean that Celtic win, won’t it?!

How is me saying Villa have been shit on occasions 'happy clapping' or claiming Newcastle haven't had a poor league campaign?

re being shit on occasions this season, this is correct and you won’t find a Villa fan that thinks otherwise.

we didn’t score until about October and at the end put together a terrible run that included the spurs performance (as bad as anything under Gerrard, although I think Unai actually tactically played a blinder given what happened later that week), drawing at Burnley, getting beaten by Fulham, and Forest  and scraping past Sunderland at home. Our last away performance that was even a decent performance was at your place.

however, we also put together the best run, playing some superb football, in years.

We are one of those sides that on our day, we are capable of beating anyone, but when off it we look truly awful.

The one other thing we do well is managing Europe. I saw a graphic the other day that showed we’ve won something nuts like fifteen European home games in a row (inc PSG and Bayern), and the CL non qualification last year was goal difference. I think the reason we balance it so well is the manager has done it literally hundreds of times.

Really in all this, Emery is excellent at managing across the whole 38 games but you are absolutely right, he’s streaky as a manager and this season in particular has been extreme - brilliant streaks but also some truly awful ones.

The Football Gods just needed to see an away team going to a formidable ground and coming away with the win in a last day of the season title decider.

We've managed to 'manage' the whole season brilliantly, though, and Emery deserves huge credit for that.

This is it for me. Excellent manager tbh.

For anyone who thinks I just harp on about Villa not being lucky because I like to argue with stat nonces, here’s the article I read that explains why Villa play the game in a way that doesn’t fit the xG modelling, it’s not luck that has them defying their xG.

To quote Opta: “Villa are laughing in the face of xG”

Amazing how Villa have managed to play midweek all the time without crying on about it and looking shit every weekend. Wonder how they've done that.

Aye, they looked class against Spurs…

Loads of FA Cup final stuff on the tapes but look at how much of an occasion it used to be man. Also Tony Hadley singing Abide with Me is a turn up for the books

Early 00’s Tony Hadley was the star turn at our works Christmas party, he was belting out the classics in a marquee behind the offices.

I was right in front of the little stage next to Anne the MILF who was a Directors secretary. She was a 40 year old scorcher. Proper glamma thing, but quite reserved.

She turned to me and screamed “I KNOW I’M MARRIED BUT I WANT TO FUCK TONY HADLEY TONIGHT”

Tony would definitely have heard her.

I never found out if she did though.

Didn't even realise it was the FA Cup Final today. What a meh line up as well. So fucking boring. Maybe the two aren't unrelated.

WTF, I didn't realise the final was today until you posted that.

Wow, they talk about how the cup feels devalued and then they slot it into Matchweek 37 with fuck all build up. The FA Cup final should bring down the curtain on the season, played 1 week after all the league games.

What a drab looking final too, Celtic vs Hearts is where the fun will be today anyway

Yep, most important player for the way we play out for almost the entire season. Massive stroke of luck.

In terms of performances and xg vs xga. How do you rank the performances va previous seasons - just on performances? Often when I’ve watched a game live, Villa haven’t been very good even with games you’ve won.

For us the season we finished 4th with 70 points I think - was our best year performance wise.  Every unit was top. Last season  felt more dependent on individuals and being red hot in crucial moments.

This article was written mid Villa winning streak.  After Gw21 they had 42 points - borderline title challenging form.  They’ve picked up 20 points in the last 16 games which is firmly mid table form.  Supporting the idea that the underlying data was unsustainable.  They’ll end the season with the same points or less than Forest last season with an inferior GD and a similar season arc.

Europa League win and it’s the best season for Villa in my lifetime so it doesn’t matter.
