Ellis H
"Data-driven" has been the watchword in football of recent months. With the success of Brighton and Brentford overachieving in the Premier League thanks to the clubs' clever analytics and transfer policies, a lot of their rivals have started to revamp their own internal processes to copy them. The brains behind Brighton's success (betting impresario Tony Bloom) realised two things. 1/ There was a limit to the amount of additional uplift his traders could give the team; and 2/ there weren't enough good analytics teams out there to go round. So the club quietly put the word out that their trading nouse was for hire. To trial, they agreed to start working with Ipswich Town. Ipswich's rise to the top division has been meteoric. But now they're in the same division as Brighton, football insiders are starting to wonder who gets the best analytics when the two clubs play each other.” Hadn’t heard of that connection but it does help explain Ipswich flying up the leagues and quickly looking competitive in the PL. Yorkie
Interesting watch. I don't go in as hard on our transfer policy as others but you do wonder, given the recent failures, how much we're sinking ourselves into this sort of stuff.

We are probably way behind the curve unfortunately. We have a lot of old boys and nothing about what we do screams being on the cutting edge.

LFEE
Interesting article on Kane. Such a tricky one to judge. I still feel he’s on the wain and Spurs sold him at the perfect time. Others disagree and point to him still scoring boat loads of goals and should still be Englands No.9. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2024/10/01/bild-accuses-harry-kane-of-going-missing-in-big-games/

Selling a 30-year-old striker for almost 100m in the age of FFP is something you can't really pass on if the opportunity is there. Regression could always be quick too but I would think Kane should be fine as pace has never really been an asset for him. AyeDubbleYoo
Spurs sold well but also Kane is still class. He should definitely be England’s forward IMO, we just need to put people around him who can run in behind.
54
Southampton defender Jack Stephens has been handed an additional two game ban after abusing officials in the wake of his sending off against Manchester United. According to the fourth official, Stephens called him a "f***ing little c***" before returning to call him a "c***" one more time, while he used the same insult when referee Stuart Atwell showed him the red card ten minutes before fulltime. Tiresias
Has there been any discussion on this imminent ruling on the Liassa Diarra case regarding transfers? If they rule that he was unfairly restricted from moving his trade could mean that players will find it substantially easier to break their contracts. It will likely mean an independent body being set up to detirmine value of contracts that clubs will have to compensate when purchasing players but would essentially end the ability of clubs to keep hold of players 'against their will', if a player wants to break a contract they can and the buying club just has to accept whatever compensation is agreed by the body. This will be catastrophic for smaller clubs dependent on player sales as the compensation will almost certainly be significantly lower. It will be simply illegal to stop say man city coming in for Bruno mid contract. As such player contracts will be worth a lot less. It will presumably mean cost of players will be substantially less but it will be impossible to prevent man city (and maybe us once ffp is all evened out) from just assembling who we like based on players. I would anticipate wages spiking as a means of pricing out clubs coming in for players. A total clusterfuck in otherwords. Interesting if any other takes on it to be honest, i think it will likely be slightly less dramatic than that but looks a possibility.
