Europe via any means next year is a solid achievement given the season we’ve had, and the nature of the league this year.

Really can’t see CL mind, Europa we’ve got a good chance of qualifying for if we push on starting with Wolves.

2 points off 5th and still in all competitions despite being really sketchy is excellent. A result like that always feels available to us because of how tight everything is.

Just need to keep staying positive and pushing for points, play smart football and we have another half the season to play for.

A lot of parallels between this season and the 03/04 one. Poor away form, home record just about keeping us in the mix, average teams competing in the top 8-10 (03/04 it was Fulham, Charlton & Villa, this season Sunderland & Brentford). Looks like a lower than average points tally will be needed to finish top 5 (we got there with 56 points in 03/04). Hopefully we scrape to the same outcome this year and make sure going forward we're better than this.

I’m pretty confident we will find better form in the last couple months of the season. The question is what’s still possible after a ridiculous run of games between now and March.

Aren't England comfortably top of the UEFA coefficient as it stands?

I believe so but as it stands no. Hopefully top 5 at the end of the season.

edit: I do this at work all the time, qualify everything. Technically, top 4 gets UCL but practically top 5 could be good enough.

5 wins, 2 draws, 2 defeats the last 9 League games. Stumbling into a bit of form since those horrible back-to-back losses at West Ham & Brentford. Definitely something about a shoddy Brentford away result that brings about an upturn in form.

Our results have never really been as bad as the performances and mood suggest TBH. If we'd not lost the derby I don't think it would ever have reached the levels of concern it did.

Said it before it reminds me a bit of the relegation survival season. Looked dire but we were never that many points off safety, and we never gave up.

Here's an end of December update. The chart shows a preseason predicted trajectory towards 62 points, which is the average required for sixth place in PL era. The expected points per month takes account of how the games fall, in terms of strength of opposition and whether home or away. The formula has been pretty accurate last four seasons. We are four points behind the predicted/expected December total.

We have three points already, from the 15 available in January. We'd need 13 of these (rather than the 9 the formula predicted) to immediately get on track by the end of this month. We'd probably need to accumulate 65 points in total (rather than 62) if still aspiring to fifth.

Must win the next three to build momentum and start to get a streak of wins.

Tough games after that v Villa and Liverpool with PSG neatly sandwiched in between.

With the FA Cup and Carabao semi first leg, January is an absolutely huge month for us.

Could end up in the FA Cup 4th round, CL knockouts, a lead in the Carabao semi and 5 league wins including humbling Liverpool away. I’ll wank any of you off if that happened.

We’re getting there.
