Jewel
Top 6 is looking beyond us now. I think 7th is the best we can hope for. In what scenario does 7th spot get Europa League? I'd personally love a Europa League campaign. You'd still get some glamour clubs and ties in it. And it is a competition that we would have genuine shot at winning. We kind of missed out on it since the takeover. Normally, a club has a steady rise through the competitions, Conference to Europa and then Europa to the CL. But we just sort of bypassed it all and jumped straight into the CL. And whilst that has been great, we also missed out on good opportunities to put some trophies in the cabinet. What I mean is that Eddie has shown little signs that he can handle that many games and still be a competitor for top spots in the PL. Getting to the final in Conferance would fill up the schedule for the entire season.
Superior Acuña
I think we will probably finish 7th. It’s not the best case scenario. It’s unlikely but possible that we can close a 6 point gap with 42 points left to play for. Do think we’ll do enough to be ahead of the rest of that pack though. I'd still rather be in Europe and I'm sure most at Newcastle would prefer that as well. We have a big enough squad to cope now, we can use it to give the squad players a game if we don't want to take it seriously. Although I am pretty certain we will. AyeDubbleYoo
The league is all over the place, we could still finish almost anywhere. Shame our current fixtures are so hard because we could be facing a worse situation in a few weeks.

People kept pointing to us only being 2pts off a CL place a couple of weeks ago but that was ignoring we had played the easier games and had much tougher games to come. If you look at the general pattern of how we've performed so far, our current position of 10th is about right.

Well pretty hard to judge, but even if that’s true the point remains that nobody is consistent and the picture can quickly change. People have this annoying habit of assuming that anything negative is permanent and anything positive is about to go wrong.

Of course it can change, but I am just going off how we have performed so far. I was hoping Wissa coming back would give us the focal point up front to make a big difference but he's been poor when he's played. Gordon getting picked ahead of him on Saturday spoke volumes. Yorkie
If we're going to finish in the Europa places, we just need to avoid a truly miserable losing run and hope everyone else in the pack keeps dropping points by May. Our fixtures then are Brighton (h), Forest (a), West Ham (h), Fulham (a). Picking up 10-12 points there could change everything.

I also don't think there's that much difference in terms of keeping/signing players between CL and EL. Even if we make the CL again we're still a tier below those teams who are in it every year and competing for their domestic league titles (eg. Isak) and we've seen that players will still pick the bigger clubs over us even when we've qualified and they haven't (eg. Mbeumo, Cunha). Obviously making the Champions League increases our headroom but I'm thinking more about how attractive a destination we would be for potential targets. The College Dropout
If I was a betting man, I would bet on us to finish with 56-59 points and finish 8th-10th. Maybe more if we sign someone or lose in the play offs. Less if we go deep in the CL or FA Cup.
The College Dropout
I would’ve accepted 8th as our level at the start of the season.
AyeDubbleYoo
3 or 4 positions could be decided by 0-2 points the way the league is going now. So basing anything on league position might be a bit of a fool’s errand.

So maybe we can sneak in there.
Coffee_Johnny
End of January update. The chart shows a preseason predicted trajectory towards 62 points, which is the average required for sixth place in PL era. The expected points per month takes account of how the games fall, in terms of strength of opposition and whether home or away. The formula has been pretty accurate last four seasons. We are six points behind the predicted/expected January total. And even falling behind the 7th place expectation. We only managed 7 points from the 15 available in January. The sixth place formula predicted 9 points. Time's ticking away if we are going to make up the deficit.

Guillaume
11 points behind that shite manure team, shows what a bad season we are having. 6 points behind Liverpool in 6th, we can forget that too. 7th is the best we can hope for, need to start with a win today
