Hard to believe we've been as shite as we've been this season and are now 6th, 2 points off fourth.

Then again I also kinda feel like Villa have been a bit rubbish yet are flying. It's a very weird season.

There are loads, loads more of these this season. If we'd been as watertight as we know we can be we'd legitimately be where Villa are.

We’d also be top if we didn’t fuck up the Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, West Ham, Brentford, Villa, Leeds, Bournemouth, mackems and Brighton games.

We could be top of the CL group too if we didn’t fuck up the Barcelona, Marseille and Leverkusen games.

I'm more raging about the Spurs draw than the mackem loss, fuck knows why!

Equally we're 2 points off 10th.

Not that I want to focus on that, let's push ahead. Next prem game is Wolves away, a good chance to extend our league run and move away from seagulls and seagull-shaggers alike.

When we were losing I decided I was going to stop having any hope for this season as it was too stressful. Although even if we'd lost, everyone's so inconsistent we'd still be in it, but I just couldn't deal with hope followed by being let down. And I'd stop doing this. Anyway we won and we're class.

Us -12 (nc)

ManU +9 (nc)

Tottenham 0 (-1) (quite remarkable that they're exactly the same as last season, which was so shit)

Villa +7 (+1)

Chelsea -10 (-3)

Almost like we've not been shite.

We finished 22 points ahead of ManU last season so still on track to finish ahead of them!

We've probably not got many games left where you would expect us to eat into that 12 points though

Twelve fewer than last season would be 54. Opta now has us on 58.

We're pretty much over the Isak disruption now Wissa is playing, and presumably won't be in four competitions from March onwards, so I'm quite hopeful of getting around 60 regardless of what the remaining fixtures are. Results in specific fixtures often echo across seasons though, so this is interesting analysis. I suppose the main difference this season is that Leeds and the mackems have been much better than your average promoted club.

The last three games have improved it but the Chelsea game was another poor second half from us.

Here's the season table. 19 second half goals conceded.

First half is this, including losing to Leeds last night. 8 goals conceded, up with the best.

60 points isn’t usually enough for European football.  But it looks like it will be this season potentially

That's what makes me think of the 03/04 season so much. High 50s would have got top 4. We finished 5th on around 56 points and having only won 2 away matches all season having been in and around teams like Charlton & Bolton for most of the season. Very similar vibes to this year.

Aye 60 points this season might be enough for 5th and another go at the CL

so many of the sides around us are absolute shite, like. I've watched plenty of Villa, Liverpool, Man U and Chelsea and they are not good teams. We're not particularly good either ofc.

Brentford look dangerous tbh. Had a slow start but loads of momentum now, solid defence and a lethal striker.

I'm a lot more confident on this now. Its not unreasonable to say that we could be out of all three cup competitions in five weeks time, especially with our away form as it is. That means a clear run at the league with no midweek distractions and injuries. Three months for Howe to do his magic on the training ground with one game a week and target 4th or 5th place.

We’d have a (outside) shot at top 8. It’s tough as Eddie is not one to concede a game and I can’t imagine him wanting to lay down in a LC semi or the FA Cup.

We are essentially starting the City game 2-0 down though on paper, whilst the other games are (obviously) starting 0-0 so surely we prioritise those.

We haven’t scored a single goal under Howe at the Etihad, so to think we will score 3 and keep a clean sheet is bonkers. He won’t admit it publicly but he will know our LC run is done.

If the season ended and we finished 5-8th, out in the LC Semis, knocked out somewhere in the last 16 of CL or later and knocked out somewhere from this next round or later in FA Cup and won nothing this year, i'd still be perfeclty happy with where things shook out.
