Sibierski
One comfort in that, all the sides we are challenging for to get to 7th, we play at home. But it's the inconsistency this season that ruins the confidence
ExiledGeordie
Europa league this season for me, at the moment I just don’t see enough quality or consistency for CL.
TRC
A bit of investment and we get top 7 comfortably, possibly even top
ramirez
Concur that cl has gone for us now. Still important to get some sort of European football though.

Conference League is a waste of time - players aren't interested in it and zero revenue from it. At least Europa has the prize of CL football. I'm fully aware we've beaten the shite at home that's below that cut-off point but 3 wins against City, Fulham & Everton is absolutely fucking gash, don't care how you slice it we're no longer a good team nor a team whom others fear. I've read the word 'transitional season' way too many times over the last few months - performances and results have been poor for quite a while now. Transition implies change and a gradual evolution into something better - I'm not seeing that, if anything we're more predictable, dull, blunt and passive as we've ever been since Howe was appointed Looking at that, the fact we have played City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs at home and scored 2 goals in each game, but only won 1, is very disappointing
Jewel
We should have enough about us to get 7th, considering the teams we are competing with for that position. We would need to beat out the likes of Everton, Brighton, Fulham, Brentford and maybe Tottenham if they can get their shit together. That should be doable for us. Is there any way 7th gets us Europa League? Otherwise we need to be aiming for 6th which will be much tougher to get because we will have to overhaul at least one of Liverpool, Chelsea and Man Utd. The top 3 looks set in stone now. Conference League is a complete waste of time and energy. The Europa at least offers a route back into the CL, and is still a prestigious enough competition for us to go all out to try and win.
Sibierski
Agree with general consensus about Conference League, but considering we possibly have one trophy in like 50 years come end of the season, we can’t turn down trophy opportunities. Plus if narrative is still ‘Eddie needs to learn 2 games a week’, then being in a lesser European competition will help surely. Can’t not be it, then qualify for Europa/UCL and repeat the same dance. I think if the FA Cup winners finished in the top 5 and we get the extra CL place then you'd have; Top 5 - Champions League 6th & 7th - Europa League 8th - Conference League
BermyToon
Conference League isn't as bad as the Intertoto Cup from 2006, is it?
TRon
Not sure we will do enough to get into Europe at all. We are in there pitching, but so are a dozen other teams without much to separate them.
The College Dropout
A lot will depend on how many games we play in cups. If we are out of all them come the end of Feb we'll have 3 months of 1 game a week which will help a lot.

Sibierski
Away games completely different landscape this time. Last time it was: Forest, Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Palace, Burnley, Man Utd, Brentford. Can probably guess which 3 we lost. Home games slightly more challenging too. Final 8 we can go on a run, especially as we could be out of Europe by then, but it’s the next 7 that’s the issue. Goes from one extreme to the next, so just got to try and cling on some how over these next 7, regardless how messy the performances look. 10 points would be bare minimum to give us a shot. Aston Villa never win at SJP. Think that Liverpool game on Saturday will tell a lot about where this season goes imo. The mackems, Leeds, Burnley and Forest were all able to get results there this season. If it’s another meek surrender there, this season can get in the bin. nufc123
Yeah that Liverpool game will tell us some things. The standard Anfield loss, or us showing up and learning. Not ideal going there after a hard game against PSG. Edited January 26 by nufc123

gbandit
Probably fair in a way, however, they had the squad to compete on multiple fronts and win them all. They just didn’t have the manager
jack j
Sure they had the league pretty well sewn up by mid march anyway and ended it quite poorly? Was hardly a 10 game winning run resulting in a last day of the season win anyway.
