When he connects with one of the million crosses we put in the box, I'll believe in him as a striker.

He's not a striker. He's just been better than the alternatives over the past couple of months which has convinced some people that he can play that role.

A good couple of months won't convert me into thinking that he's suddenly one of our best players again or that we should build around him. He was absolute dog shit for the best part of 18 months and is turning it on now because the world cup is around the corner.

The player who was the fans player of the season in 23/24 didn't suddenly start getting criticism because of how he looks, because he's a scouser, or because he's into philosophy. He got it because he played poorly and was perceived to be not giving his all, and it was imo allowed to slide for over a year, before anyone really said anything about it. If anything he got way more rope than possibly any Newcastle player I can think of.

That said, I do think that the increase in criticism of him happened in sync with him actually improving drastically. It was very weird.

He got legitimately criticised for being poor but people are primed to give him shit, because of the way he looks etc. A substantial amount of people hated him from the off, had to wind their necks in, then were thrilled to have an excuse again. I’ve heard him called a scouse cunt too many times at matches.

I don't think they were primed to hate him because of his looks or because of being into philosophy. As far as I remember everyone in our fanbase hated him at Everton because every time we played them he was a snivelling little shit bag who dived all the time. Since then he's been our fan's player of the season and escaped scrutiny from a year of poor, often lazy looking performances.

Him getting called a scouse cunt isn't because he's a scouser, it's because he's played poorly and people are arseholes who'll use any tool at their disposal, short of racism and homophobia (though not always) to insult players. No one's calling him a scouse cunt in 23/24.

Just going to have to agree to disagree there. Yes, that's all part of it, but his looks, personality etc are def too imo. The amount of times I've seen men at matches triggered by a player wearing a hairband, pictures like this broke people's brains. images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRrK7smTq3gmtZ92SRmlT4 I've heard more vitriol to Gordon in the stands than any other current player. People think Murphy is shit and get angry, but people have a visceral dislike of Gordon - that they were happy to overlook when he was playing well but comes creeping back in when it can.

I can see him going to Arsenal for some reason. (Gordon, Tonali and Tino will be the big names who go I think)

Do we think we allow all three of them to leave? Can't see it.

There's no way we can sell 3 star players after selling Isak last year. What kind of policy is that?

All 3 are probably at the peak of their values. This summer is going to be a massive rebuild. There need to be replacements for players who we don't even think about or have moved (Lascelles & Krafth). I think we'll keep Gordon, with Tonali and Livramento moving on. If Citeh offer £65-70M for Livramento we take that given his injury record.

The only one we are under any real pressure to sell is Tino because his contract is down to a couple of years left. Gordon and Tonali are tied down for longer, so the only way they leave is if they start kicking up a fuss.

Actually ... just remembered what Shearer said about Gordon after the first Barca game. Pretty sure that had something to do with this ;D

It's always been like that to an extent- player turns up with a fancy haircut or multi-coloured boots and fans think he's giving it the biggun and will be quicker to criticise poor form. Odd when you stand back and think about it.

In Gordon's case he does bring it on himself- he's clearly a very confident lad and has never been shy about vocalising how good he thinks he is. Basically, he does give it the biggun. Unfortunately, CL aside he hasnt backed his words up for a good 12 months until recently. Which makes it inevitable he's going to get more criticism, and more spiteful criticism than someone like Murphy who is limited but is clearly doing his best and has a much more humble persona off the pitch.

You just felt Isak was a sign the squad are starting to get itchy feet. The farce that was our Summer just amplified the lack of direction we had under PIF. And even with a CEO in place nothing feels like it's changed. Despite all the talk of being challengers in 4 years now, we've still no word on a new training ground nevermind anything on a new Stadium. Other clubs sense that uncertainty and are seeing an opportunity.
