Ronson333
Another one I’m hearing a lot is ‘oil money’, now this doesn’t appear to be an issue if its Texas oil money, but if it’s from the Middle East then its a different ball game. Whilst I think there is obvious soft power elements to the takeover, I’ve always found the idea that reputation laundering being the primary motivation a bit naive. More people in Newcastle and nationally are probably way more aware of the issues with the Kingdom in Saudi Arabia than they were two years ago. The idea that they are just trying to get Westerners to like them just feels a bit arrogant. We’re really a combination of many things. An investment, a prestige asset, a giant billboard for Saudi brands and a soft power tool. There’s also a element of Middle East proxy competition with City, PSG etc.

Tiresias
It's definitely reputation laundering tbh, and also an investment. I don't think they give a shit what a lot of people on the internet think, it's more just moving the dial on what is 'normal', so now they have us, it doesn't seem so strange them buying loads of golf stuff, and then when they buy lots of golf stuff "well we can't object to that since it's already happened to Newcastle" etc and is just a lever into further investment, so it works in terms of financial investment and also to help their reputation in terms of gaining more influence over UK and beyond. If some fanboys decide to start loving all things Saudi Arabia no harm there, and the flack they receive doesn't really affect them much. My feelings on the takeover have been posted endlessly before, I don't really understand why fans feel the need to go to bat for our owners online and the like, a lot of the criticisms are completely valid, and I would be critical if another club had been bought by them. I look forward to the day that sport as a whole is owned by and run for fans, but that day is a long long long way off if it ever happens, (it won't). It's clear Tonali wasn't asking for the move this summer but his club preferred to have the coin instead of his services, no point in being angry at the boyhood fan for leaving in those circumstances. I never wished anything good for players that used us as a stepping stone like Sissoko and Gini (Ashley-era and all that but still) but always cheered on players I liked that were forced out or naturally moved on to bigger things like Ayoze, HBA or now ASM. Same for Carroll after he left Liverpool because fuck Liverpool. In nearly all circumstances I want the best for players that leave us. At the end of the day they are people like me and you doing they best they can to support their families. I thought Gini was pea hearted when it mattered for us but always seemed a decent lad and happy he was utilised better at Liverpool and has had a good career. Never had any issues with Sissoko. He was a limited player but he never hid, never shirked responsibility and always seemed to try his best. No problem with players using us as stepping stones if they do their best. Only player I’ve genuinely not wanted to do well after leaving us is Michael Owen.
AyeDubbleYoo
I’m neutral about most players who leave us TBH, especially the ones I don’t have any affection for (which is most of the Ashley era signings).
joeyt
I mean under Ashley we actively sold the club to players as a stepping stone club It was frustrating seeing Sissoko in the French press every week saying he wanted to leave but the club was sold to him as a stepping stone Edited August 18, 2023 by joeyt

Coffee_Johnny
This is the big stage. World watching with bated breath. Doesn’t matter the relative importance of the game, let’s face it beyond the terminally optimistic amongst us, it’s a free hit; not many would blink an eye if we are well beaten. But putting himself toe to toe with players like Rodri, if he can stand out here, if he can make a difference, his transfer fee will look an absolute steal and his, and our, profile and reputation around the world will be immense.
