Surely they can just look at this betting account?

Clearly the investigation will but the press don't have a clue atm.  Be interesting to see if he plays at the weekend. If he doesn't for me that's a worry it's serious.

Hearing the whole Wetherspoons thing was a bet now.. my whole life seems like a lie!

You know it will be our luck while it took almost all season for the FA to let Toney play and have half his ban in pre-season, Tonali's will happen this week without delay and be massive!

What if he changes his name and do surgeries to become unreocgnizeable and look much younger. We can shove him into the academy, falsify his documents so that he's now 17, and then pick him up to the first team after a couple of months. Any name suggestions?

Obafemi Tonali or Sandro Martins

You get the idea

Just going to wait and see how this pans out before I jump in and have a pop at the lad. There's always a bit of context involved and if there's charges to answer and he's made some daft decisions then he'll have to accept it and take it on the chin, we all make mistakes and there's always the distinct possibility he's got an addiction which he'll need help and support for. He's our player now and we need to do the best for him and the club and that means waiting for actual facts and details to come out. I'm dismissing everything that comes out of the Italian press until it's confirmed.

It looked really bleak for Paqueta for a week or so until it seemed to vanish and be forgotten about. Not saying this will go the same way but let's just see first. I can accept a few tongue in cheek comments but some of the stuff I've seen written about him since this broke has been shocking and way ott

This may turn out like the steroid scandal in baseball where the first names that came out were a big deal and then it became easier to speculate on who didn't take steroids.

By the time we hear 30-40 names everyone will be bored of this and it will be slaps on the wrist all around (if it was only casino games). Betting on Italian football and potentially Milan would be a whole different thing.

The fuck is going on in Italy? I’m sure it’s true of many places too but how is it so institutionalised? Surely there must be legal betting options they could have gone for which would have given them the same dopamine hit?

Sound like the time Juve were dropped from Serie A and stripped of titles for match fixing.  Whole league was in on it.

https://www.getfootballnewsitaly.com/2023/serie-a-betting-no-sporting-fraud-expected-for-nicolo-zaniolo-and-sandro-tonali/

No evidence of Nicolo Zaniolo and Sandro Tonali being involved in sporting fraud has been found so far in the betting case.

Tonali and Zaniolo were accused of being involved in the sporting fraud case after their names popped up in the Nicolo Fagioli case, with the midfielder’s phone having been investigated and scanned. The duo had admitted that they had indeed been involved in poker and blackjack, but didn’t know that the facilities were illegal. Despite that, investigations were ongoing.

But Sky Italia report that no evidence of sporting fraud has been found and the expectation is that this will remain the case. Having said that, chats will be analysed and this will be followed by the Prosecutor and the two players and it could take place in the next few days.

So far, it does seem as if the two players only involved themselves in poker and blackjack but investigations will remain ongoing.

Not that repeatedly posting Italian media is a good idea, but whatever

Really hope this is the case man, slap on the wrist from the Italian authorities for breaking some sort of daft gambling laws over there, and move on.

This seems like a crazy blow-up if it is just poker and blackjack. Surely, for it to be getting this much of an investigation there must be some fairly major signs that some players have done some seriously dodgy stuff. Whole thing is just really odd until we get more information

As previously discussed with Toney and Paqueta, these lads are a bit daft if it's proven they've bet on football.

What leaves a sour taste is they're effectively laying in a bed made by the industry. Football and betting are now synonymous with each other. There's countless adverts, sponsorships and partnerships at any given club or advertised at any given game.

So while anyone involved needs to take responsibility and accept the punishment coming their way, football needs to take a look at itself and it's relationship with the betting industry, whether it's for your average problem gambler or an addicted footballer. Of course in a game who's authorities thirst for cash knows no bounds that won't happen.
