Well, the timing of him seemingly stopping betting and being charged implies he wasn't actively aware he was about to get done when he came here and just joined us to save Milan taking the hit.

So we've got that going for us...

If you add up Suarez’s racism ban and both his bans for physically biting his opponent, he was banned for way less games than Tonali has been for placing bets (none of which have affected outcomes of games). Shows you where the game priority’s lie.

Given the EFL are sponsored by sky bet says it all.

Still think it's silly to try and minimise the offence of gambling on your own business. Opens a massive window to corruption that could kill the sport. If you lose the trust you risk everything. A slap on the wrist isn't enough, ill or not.

Bitch please it's not like he's killed someone.

Drink drivers don't get banned and that's way more dangerous than what this kids done.

Don't think anyone is saying it should just be a slap on the wrist. But the current punishment, which is multiple times worse than if you racially abuse another player, is clearly wrong.

Think the logical thing would be banned until you complete your rehab program. Then second and third offences is when it starts to get to 8 months/1 year territory.

That maybe, but putting a ban on betting higher than being a racist, or kicking the fuck out of cats is low. Also I don’t think the football authorities can have it all. They can allow for so much gambling sponsorship, and actually ban the players for parking in it, you get one or the other.

FIFA and all of the major FA's essentially killed the sport anyway.

That doesn't mean he was betting under investigation?

How not? If he was betting from August to October and was banned in October - he was betting whilst under investigation.

I'm sure the Italian investigation was going on for months before he was charged and eventually banned. The key question is did Tonali, Milan or NUFC know he was being investigated?

Some definitely are.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the rehab programme he's been put in is 8 months long isn't it? So it would be an 8 month ban for a first offence rather than 10 months, based on what you're saying.

Many would say you're an addict for life and might always need outside assistance, too, so that might work out pretty badly for some players.

Again, this isn't about someone doing something legal and fun. It's about doing something in the neighborhood of insider trading or fraud. The kind of thing that can get you blackmailed into fixing games etc. bearing in mind the people taking your bets know they've compromised you. That's why it's a killer.

I'm perfectly open to ideas around an amnesty for players who haven't been caught yet and come forwards etc. It's not about hang em and flog em. But a lot of people aren't understanding how close to the edge this kind of phenomenon can take things if it isn't stringently policed.

The new charge is dated until the 12th October, which is basically when news of the investigation broke, with him being questioned at the Italy camp.

So you could probably argue it started before then, so he was probably betting whilst under investigation (without knowing it), but most likely wasn’t betting once he knew of the investigation.

You know there are 31 days in October right?

For the sake of stopping the conjecture the FA are investigating up to the 12/10/23 the Italian FA first pulled Tonali in on the 12/10/23, there is no overlap, he didn't bet under investigation, anything more than a consecutive ban is over kill.
