There was a great moment in the first half when he was back defending a corner and Wolves pumped it long down the middle of the pitch. João Gomes was busting a nut to close him down, instead of going back to the keeper Tonali knocks the ball over towards the sideline, retains possession and wins the foul, looked like he was enjoying the chase and decided to bring Gomes for an extra run. He's like a cross between Forrest Gump and a border Collie.

Felt it last season even with Isak that he was becoming our most important player. 

 

Pretty comfortable now Isak is gone that he's our best player. 

 

Said the same in the Bruno thread though. We need to find a way to get him some rest occasionally this season or we're gonna burn him out.

Thought that was brilliant because Gomes was shading towards the keeper in anticipation of trying to cut that off or pressure pope, it was starting to look really sketchy and then he just changed direction and left us all in the dust lol.

It’s debatable but I genuinely think he is the best player at Newcastle now.

The only reason which people may have said Isak was due to having no backup. Agree with the comments that he is comfortably our best player. 

 

I loved it towards the end when he was being hassled but retained possession whilst being pressed, dribbled it down the line and then won a throw in.

I don't think it's really even debatable. Obviously 'best' can be subjective, but if you simply look at it as who is the hardest to replace, Tonali is far and away the answer.

Honestly this is my biggest fear. As mentioned above, replacing him is ridiculously difficult.

 

Tonali is a cool customer, so it's not easy to see how invested he is in our city, culture and team. Hopefully we can get a fresh contract sorted and a few more years of him because I do think inevitably he'll move on for more money and chances at glory.

Whilst both have had very busy International breaks the former's was the bigger trial.

He'll move on in the near future quite possibly given the state of the sport now-a-days, but I do think it'll be a completely different situation. His family is here and he's going to be a father. He'll probably have a connection to the location for that reason alone. 

 

I understand that players come and go and that's the game. The manner in which it happens is important.

You'd hope that the memory of how much the Newcastle fans stuck by him through the betting ban stuff might help to keep him here when other clubs come sniffing. Not too many fan bases would have been as understanding and loyal.

Yea, that was immense. He could’ve took the easy option of passing back but he has the aura of ‘I’m the best here’, so took on Gomes and goaded him into the foul and it took all pressure off.
 

He was a top player when he joined, but now he’s fully adjusted to the prem style, he’s now proper elite.

I think the debate is if he's the best CM in our history. IMO he's the best I have seen in 30 years of supporting the club
