He doesn't really take charge enough of getting on the ball in that position, when we're trying to play out from the back. He usually looks great as the left sided 8 for Italy, but don't think he's ever been tried there at Newcastle. Perhaps having him and Bruno sitting alongside each other in midfield would give a better balance, but we haven't really tried that either. Quite a lot of the basketball phases of play come from him losing it in bade areas with daft, blind passes. I think it took 10 minutes for Bruno to get fed up with him sitting deeper and not building anything. Before he came back and demanded the ball all the while. But he has been very poor on the ball. FWIW the midfield approach where Bruno and Joe run forward into positions where they rarely get the ball is a bit odd.
