Could the Saudi clubs sell to us cheaper than market value or would that be investigated?

Tin foil hat on - pay the players enough that they will fake that they've flopped over there, so value drops, then we sign them. [emoji38]

Tin foil indeed. That said, whatever works.

May not be tin foil hat territory anyway. What will be the going rate for players who wentnto Saudi on their return ?

Aside from a CB, right wing will almost certainly be a position we upgrade in the summer, any ideas who we may target? Maybe someone who can also play up top if needed?

Been lots of noise about Nico Williams. His contract expires in the summer too. He might be Barca bound though, despite them having that 16 year old.

It somehow feels like there's a lot of left sided attackers but i struggle to come up with too many for the right. Neto would have been class (injuries though)

Maybe that japanese guy at Sociedad.

It's a shame Marcus Rashford is on 325k a week, I feel with Eddie, he could use Rashford in his favoured inside left role, perhaps move Gordon to the right, and have Isak and Rashford rotate in formation.

Rashford would flourish under a manager like Howe.

Rashford's mentality is too weak to be a proper world class player. He lacks the consistency because of his confidence which is too much up and down.

The World Class players when playing at their lowest level are still on a decent level relative to their ability.

What insight do you have to make that assessment?

Seems to me to just be low in confidence because he's got another shit manager, plays in a shit team that lacks any cohesion.

Man U fans whipping boy but his goals last season saved them. Ungrateful cunts

You have a point, but TBF I thought a lot of our players were a lot weaker than they really are when the club was a disaster. Not that they’re world class of course.

This, would thrive in our culture.

He can be unplayable in patches and then he often goes missing for longer periods of time. It's not exactly rocket science to say that he is very much a "confidence player". Yes confidence is important and every player plays better with good confidence, obviously. But his problem is that the level between high on confidence to low confidence is massively vast, and that's the difference between him and a world class player. Simply put, his lowest level is very low. It's a mentality thing and it's obvious to see. You could say that he currently plays for a poor team which obviously doesn't help him right now. However, he has been there a long time and has shown several times that he isn't very consistent overall, during a longer period of time. World class players  still manage to look good (or shall i say better) in teams that aren't performing at their best. Thats the difference between a very good player and world class. Consistency.

Snippets from the Ashworth interview posted in the Tonali thread:

We always look two windows in advance, so we will have planned for what we will try to do to strengthen the team in the summer of 2024.

If the right opportunities come in January we don’t mind bringing that forward. We did that with Anthony Gordon last January. We brought that forward when we had the opportunity. Nothing is any different.

What we always try to do is have that flexibility. So, what we have said to the recruitment team is, we could get an injury, we could get a suspension and there might be a player who wants to go. So, we have to have that agility.

We obviously know we are going to be without Sandro for the rest of the season. But we’ve got quite a number of midfield players and we have a number of players who can play in different positions. You saw that the other night [knocking Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup] and that is one of the strengths of the squad. We’ve got a few injuries, but fingers crossed they are back and ready for January anyway.

To answer the question, we’ve got a number of things we can do. It might not be a like-for-like replacement for Sandro. It could be a player who can play in a different position or multiple positions.

It could be that young Lewis Miley gets more minutes and comes to the fore between now and January. We might look in a different area of the pitch.

But obviously it is a blow losing Sandro. He was one of our big signings in a key area of the pitch.

He was going to be one of our most influential players so we have to do everything in our power to make sure the squad is as competitive as possible going into the second half of the season.

We do have a little bit of flexibility and we are able to look at the market. But there are lots of ways to do it. Whether it is a straight loan or a loan with an obligation or an option. You can sign a player and monetise it with a long contract. We are going to have to be quite creative, but we do want to be active.
