There are more than enough players out there to be what we were in our first 2-3 seasons under Eddie Howe. We are being fed such nonsense. The main reason we aren't getting these deals done is we aren't fast enough, sure enough, or paying enough to make any other decision worth waiting around. 

 

Yeah, we absolutely don't have to become Brighton and Bournemouth. I don't get that whole idea either.

 

We do have to work a whole lot harder or do a lot more when it comes to player recruitment though. From identifying players right through to tying deals up.

 

We don't seem like a very efficient or knowledgeable operation at any part of that whole process at the minute.

We've tried to play safe with Wissa and Elanga, both coming to us on the back of very good seasons. Yes we overpaid, but I don't think anyone would have anticipated how useless they would have been. Elanga...it seems like they looked at the stats without considering how he could work in our team.

Sibierski, Ba, Dabizas, Acuna, Ben Arfa...none of these had the 'top' clubs tripping over themselves to snatch them from under our noses, but all ended up doing pretty well out of their time with us

A lot of things have converged

 

1. In 2026 do the cartel intervene on Gordon, Isak, Tonali, Bruno, Tino, Hall - more likely yes

2. In 2026 are we even prepared to pay the premium we did for most of these and move quickly - probably not

3. In 2026 would these players even want to come in the same situation? I'm doubtful in some cases. All need points 1 and 2 in our favor

 

To even do the Brighton & Bournemouth thing you have to move quickly. Both have multi-club situations too.

Well recent...theres a fair arguement for Joelinton, and Schaar. Yes admittey Jo was pretty useless initially but the position change made him a player not to be laughed at. Schaar wasn't exactly unknown, but we picked him up for peanuts, with no competition, and he often appears in NUFCs best ever 11 now.

Those 2 players sprang to my mind too. I also think Osula carries a bit of the maverick underdog about him.

There’s absolutely no decisiveness about us. I’m not sure what is supposed to be attractive about us beyond that we should be able to pay a bit more than some of those around us.

 

We finished 12th, no Europe, we’re selling our best players. Whatever your position on the manager, only the most optimistic of fans see Howe as anything other than a dead man walking and it will certainly look like that from the outside. It looks like the dying ambers of a ‘project’ rather than anything exciting. We had the humiliation of the Isak transfer, last summers signings look mismanaged and I know it was played down, but the Barca second half was a complete and utter shambles

on the world stage. Last summer and then the season that followed was so damaging. Young players would see Burn over Hall, then him missing out on the England squad. Just as damaging imo is the sense of drift and lack of decisiveness when it comes to the manager. The club look asleep at the wheel and why are we supposed to have any confidence in Ross Wilson who hardly has a stellar background? 
 

We needed something fresh and new to move onto the next step. We just delayed it. I’m also a bit baffled at the bemusement that players would find Spurs attractive given their stadium, fan base, resources and new manager with a good reputation. Take off the rose tinted glasses for a second and the fanboy love for the manager and put your feet in the shoes of a player with one career looking for the next step.

Bring back the old days of transfers being allowed during the season. Surely a transfer window is some form of restriction on movement / jobs. It’s only in sport this sort of stuff happens. I use to love a random signing on a miserable November night to give hope going into the winter.

Burn is the one that comes to mind for me. Seemed like a stopgap centre half past his best signed to pull us through a relegation scrap. Ended up scoring the first goal in a winning Wembley final.

Agree with most of the post, but no young player with any brains is looking at Hall being dropped for 1 match and coming to that conclusion like.

 

Especially given Hall became an England International whilst at Newcastle.

Simple solution...only allow clubs to have 30 senior players on the books. Fully ban 'multi club models'. Allow u21/academy, as long as they have 3 years at a club

I'd be pleasantly surprised if we sign a player before July. Then people are gonna be like "it's only the beginning of July"

It’s getting difficult not to become a bit paranoid that agents really are using us as a way of sniffing out interest from cartel clubs.

Their stranglehold is ever increasing and there’s nowt that will be or can be done about it. When most other clubs are simply happy to keep it as the Big 6 and to stop anymore joining it’s job done for those already there.

Not the end goal, but I would say the realistic short term goal is to be Aston Villa, or even just Newcastle from a season ago.

 

Consistently in the European places and occasionally in the CL despite a shoestring budget due to crushing PSR pressures.

Villa going to have to be very careful next year or so. Won't take much for them to plummet tbh. Rogers is their only player worth big money and it's an aging team.
