They can say that they will keep him if £60m is not met all they want, im 99% certain that they will settle for less. £50-55m is alot of money for them, something they might very well miss out on if he stays another year as he might decide to let the contract run out to get his huge paycheck. 

 

Might take a little longer pushing the figure down to that amount though, and we risk losing him to another club.

If 60m is too much for single players we either better be all moneyball shit and be recruiting from outside the league or we need to be forgetting about competing at the top. Maybe mbueno isn't worth it, i can believe if he's had over performed fair enough but if we have ambition and want proven players it will cost

Nah, Mbeumo can also rest when we use Murphy with Isak.

He can still only play one position at a time. He gives us flexibility but not as much flexibility as signing both a RW and a striker would. Obviously I've got no idea what our budget is but we aren't one player away from consistently being able to compete both domestically and in Europe, however good that player is.

Definitely the two players. The two mentioned would do wonders for us and gives us better flexibility

Mbeumo for me if it's those two players. I am in the get guaranteed readymade quality camp.

 

I do think 60 is slightly too much for his age and the way the market is right now though.

 

Then again he's the kind of profile we probably could ship off to Saudi if that charade is still going in 2-3 years.

Im the same. The league is so tight now that getting ahead means bringing in top quality.

 

Buying average to good players won’t help us push on.

He’d need to tick every box in our recruitment policy for that price, similar to Gordon, Tonali and Isak.

I agree to an extent. At the same time we will be playing CL and there will be tons of games. Won’t matter if we have quality if we don’t have the ability to rotate.

It’s a no for me for Mbuemo and Guehi. Just feel spending that extravagantly will just lead us back to where we are now in a few years. Especially due to their wage demands.

 

Nothing particularly critical of the players individually. Mbuemo I’ve talked about and been a fan of for years since he joined Brentford but ultimately that is when we should’ve been buying him. Guehi I’m more doubtful of but fully understand and respect our current scouting team when judging him. I’ve just not been impressed the handful of games I’ve seen him play.

Can Mbuemo actually play as an out and out striker? I saw this argument in favour of Gordon as well a couple of seasons ago, but in reality Gordon is no sort of striker.

Mbeumo joined Brentford from Ligue 2 for pennies when they were in the Championship mind. He's a class act but it's taken a long time for him to reach this level. 

 

I think there's clearly a middle ground between us blowing all of our money on peak age players and recruiting at a much lower price point with what are effectively spread bets. There's of course many players these clubs sign that don't turn into CL level players. At the end of the day while we can say 'trust the scouts' every club now has data and scouts and knows which players are available - but clubs operate in different pools and have different targets. They also have different propensities for risk, particularly if CL qualification is a factor to take into any recruitment model.

 

Paying slightly more and getting them once they've proven themselves is not a bad policy for a club that wants to compete for CL places, IMO. Liverpool basically built their success on doing that.

To put Mbeumo's goals into context, quite a few were penalties. Which he probably won't have here.

 

I really like him but would love to see what that money gets you on the continent.
