I can see why Eddie would want Guehi and Mbeumo over trying to bring someone in from a different league, we are very clearly looking for players to come in as first choice in those positions and those two are about as sure a thing as you can get in terms of hitting the ground running.

 

Positions like backup striker or another midfield option is where I’d like to see us looking to unearth gems from abroad that maybe carry a bit more risk but will come cheaper than buying established PL talent.

Same for me. For the reasons everyone thinks Mbeumo would be great (covers 2 positions) it also leaves us short in two areas if he gets injured

I don’t think so, we can just plan ahead and rest them at different times. I.e if we had 3 games a week, Isak could play 2, Mbuemo 2 (1 RW, 1 ST) and Murphy 2

Fwiw I don't think getting players from Europe is necessarily that much cheaper.

 

Akliouche was one that was floated as a right sided option (I think this might go by the wayside with Mitchell being pied off) but I think he'd still be 40 million+

 

Khusanov ended up costing City 40 million euros in the end and he's hardly hit the ground running (another one Mitchell was determined to get).

 

The wages are often less initially - this is definitely true - but recruitment is a small world these days with all the data available.amd most clubs know the values of their players. If you want quality you have to pay it.

The players a level above Guehi & Mbuemo go to Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal for £80m each and/or £250k a week wages. The £20-35m bracket are the ones that are likely mid-table players who may in 2-3 years become £60-80m, but don't really help us where we are now as a club whose next stage is to break the top 3 and show to Isak, Tonali, etc that they don't have to go to Real Madrid, Arsenal, etc to challenge for titles. That's why these go to the likes of Brighton and Bournemouth. 

 

The Guehis and Mbuemos are pretty much bang in that sweet spot of improving our team, being affordable and helping us into the top 3.

The classic criticism of Mbeumo is that he's just on a hot streak, which is (also) kind of suggested with stats because his goals scored exceeds his xG by the most of any player in the league. 

However, his goals scored number is not much more than a more nerdy stat called his xGOT number, which is the quality of the actual shots he took. xG is about the quality of chance, based on shot position, and applies to "the average striker". xGOT is the quality of the strikes taken by that player, regardless of whether it was an easy or difficult chance. Mbeumo's xGOT exceeding his xG says to me that he's a good finisher.

 

Penalties are very high in xG, so someone scoring lots of them will not exceed xG by very much. This suggests Mbeumo's total is not heavily pen dependent.

Isak's total exceeds his xGOT by three, suggesting a couple of em were saveable. That chipped pen that seemed to go through Matt Sels and left him tangled in the net certainly was.

Mbuemo and Guehi would be brilliant additions we could then go and get dcl on a free. 

Then all we'd have to worry about is centre mid.

Thats one of the reasons why I find Mbeumo such a perfect fit. He has also shown that he can handle a heavy workload. Played almost every minute for Brentford this season.

 

 

 

I miss the good old days when everybody played with at least 2 up front. 

 

Put crisps back in their normal coloured bags too. I still regularly open a bag of cheese n onion only to smell bloody salt n vinegar 😋.

Rewatch Isak’s goal at home to them this season. See who’s in the middle of their defence that slips allowing Isak to bundle it in.

Khusanov will turn out to be a top CB IMO, he was on our radar for good reason I reckon. Players like this sometimes need to mature to see what they are capable of. Just look at Ekiteke.

I think £60m for Mbuemo is about right, depends if we're able to balance that with the other signings we need to make from the overall budget though. No good if we still don't get a centre back or a keeper.
