Same questions, really though. ‘Top Clubs after best players’ shocker! It would be great to find some under the radar, but can’t be that many around in this information-rich age. The prices around Europe seem to also be high but there is likely more negotiating room and wages are far less likely to be a problem. I mostly wish we’d fully lean into our single greatest asset, which is our manager’s ability to get the most out of a player and happens to fit perfectly with our current financial position. The other side of this is, if these are the managers targets we have to try and get them. Eddie does deserve his targets obviously within reason. It feels like we are exhausting those primary targets and I'm hoping we have some back up targets. The club has to have known that getting those players we pitched for would be an uphill battle. The Prophet
Based on Eddie's post-Celtic commentary, he'd left everything in the hands of Mitchell. He'd found out he'd resigned when he was on holiday and an ad-hoc transfer team was put together from there. It's not all on Mitchell though, there should be a contingency plan for such an event. So what do we infer from this? Mitchell joined on a one year contract? His contract had an extremely short notice period? KaKa
Better scouting and recruitment from other markets allows for lower transfer fees and wages. Steve Nickson is very experienced and has shown that he has a good knowledge of players across Europe and even South America. If we are not able to pay transfer fees and match wages for priority targets due to the competition, we have to lean on Nickson and his team. If come the end of the window we have failed to do this and end up short, then the club will deserve all the flak that comes their way. It will also be a terrible look for Howe in particular, and he will have invited a lot of pressure on himself. All this complaining about the cartel clubs isn't going to be acceptable for me. The club is attractive enough to get players good enough to compete, if we widen our scope for player recruitment. Let's see if they make that pivot as the next step now. Maybe Mbuemo didn’t want £200k until Man United made their interest clear and maybe we moved on from some of these players much faster than it seemed in the press. I’m mostly frustrated that we continue to fail at putting the right pieces around Eddie.

We only gave him a year? He didn't have a notice period? It's funny how it some quarters this is all Mitchell's fault yet so many questions are to be asked about it. (Im not defending Mitchell btw) I just don't buy the stated reason he left/ was binned.

I look at the players we've chased and they all look like the profile of player Eddie likes (nothing wrong with that for those folk who will take offence) this begs the question what more could we have done? Now given the nature of the targets and fees banded around, they all kinda look like the type of signings Mitchell described as not fit for purposes. So obviously we speak about Eddie not being supported but on the face of it, these are likely his targets and also profile in a manner which the now departed SD called not fit for purposes. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist...
Scoot
Not a lot in that article that we didnt already know but Edwards is right in what he says. Hopefully we start looking for up and coming players who are unproven in the Premier league again, like we started out doing. A signing will settle everyone down a bit, but until that happens, things won't change.

Good post, But, we also gotta remember that we probably wouldn't have gotten Bruno, Isak, Botman, and Tonali this summer if they were up for grabs. Our success with these guys has other clubs paying attention. That's what we're seeing in the market right now. I reckon most fans don't get it. Arsenal were after Bruno before we even got him. Liverpool wanted Isak, but Klopp went for Nunez, and Arsenal wanted him too. They probably would've gone for those guys this summer since we were interested. We're victims of our own success, basically. The transfer strategy's been the same, I reckon. It's just that the big clubs jump in when we make a move. JP and Ekitike are perfect examples. We'd have signed one of them, like, 2 or 3 summers ago, I reckon.

Rich
Quote Newcastle had a deal worth £20m in place to sign the England Under-21 international, only for the plug to be pulled shortly after Paul Mitchell was appointed as sporting director 12 months ago. Jesse Pinkman
Surely they just access Mitchell’s emails and see what players he was monitoring/ had on his list and then approach the agents and teams of those players, which they also like. I can’t believe they have had 6 months to prepare and still ballsed it up.

Rich
Quote However, Mitchell, who left the club last month, decided not to open those talks as Isak had more than three years left on his current deal and the club’s PSR position made it difficult.
