NUFC Transfer Rumours

He's one of the best strikers in the league and we're going into a CL season needing to finish in the top 4.

Villa's gamble was the right thing to do as PSR means you have no choice but to take risks.

You can take risks like we did on Isak and Tino Livramento. The upside is massive and the downsides are low. We can't gamble with the clubs future, if we are going to plough big money into the squad, it has to be on potential rather than 29-30 year olds. Watkins would have been ideal in the days of Man City and Chelsea buying up every top player with no PSR handcuffs.

Isak stays, and we get Wissa, Gallagher, and Ghehi. On top of already securing Elanga and Ramsdale, that would be a great window.

...... And we're off..... [emoji38]

Doesn't help when only a few clubs can spend while everyone else has to count the pennies.

Yep, I liken it to a boxing match but the rules are you are up against some big punchers but you can't punch until you win a fight.... oh, and you can't win a fight without punching...

Were they risks though? He seems to only pull the trigger when he's certain he's getting quality, so I don't think we can call them any more gambles than anyone else we've signed or have bid for.

We've went in for Pedro, Ekitike, and (it seems) Sesko, so we know he's trying to replace Isak with a young forward.

They were all under 25. Watkins and Wissa are closer to 30, that will be dead money in a couple of years time. We'd basically have to win the title to justify that outlay and offset the PSR shackles which would result.

Alot of wasted time and energy no doubt wasted on the isak thing I really hope the club has a plan to get out of this mess signing players and improving the squad would be a good start.

2 weeks to go until the season starts and we seem ill prepared and that's an understatement.

He seems to only buy players he's extensively scouted and is near certain will improve us. If there's no one young enough he's confident in at the right price he'll not sign them.

He's been probably the best squad builder in the league since he arrived. We cannot have a situation where we respect that, but also let someone else throw £20-40m prospects at him who he's not confident on.

That said, I do think signing one of them for around £35m would be a good investment, and for that much you only get Wissa.

Aye I don't think £50m+ for Watkins would be wise. But I wouldn't be too worried if we signed him for a fairly high cost as I'm sure Howe painfully aware of the PSR impact.

His highlight reels and "last 50 shots" reels are OK, but I'd much rather have Watkins and Wissa. for the next 2 years and then scout the shit out of finding "another Isak".

The problem is the only way we wouldn't end up regretting Watkins and Wissa is if we win the league or it's the reason we go far in the CL / make the CL two years running from that. Literally any other outcome is going to end badly because it kills our already limited financial flexibility.

Feels like things could really pick up, Isak stays and two new in before Villa. New CEO as well ?

Love the optimism that this has been put to bed, still a few more nightmares before dawn I reckon

Not to sure about that, that must have been a big "NO" for them to brief their media stooges that they wont be back with another bid

In the first few windows after the takeover, the squad lacked quality across the board. So any half-decent signing felt like a major upgrade and naturally got fans excited. But we’ve gradually moved past that stage. As Eddie Howe said last summer, we’re now at the point where every new signing has to be the right one. Because of PSR, we simply can’t afford to splash cash on players that may not succeed here like Man United or Chelsea and end up with big-money players sitting on the bench. We need to do proper due diligence and make sure any player we bring in fits perfectly. That’s why things feel a bit different now.

Our option list is smaller now, and negotiations for those players will be tougher with more competition from the six cartel clubs.

Would it be that different to the Wood signing at the time? Came in did a job for us and was sold 18 months later for a fee that covered his remaining book value? I reckon we still get 25-30M for Watkins in 2 years time as long as he doesn’t turn into glass

Well 35m wont even get Wissa when Brentford are looking for north of 50m

If we bought a 29 year old Watkin it would probably mean we were losing a 25 year old Isak to one of our rivals. No thanks.

Aye that's a great point, nobody would have thought we were getting anything back from Wood when we signed him.
