The games in its bubble aye. But for progression, the in then out then in again nature of CL for us, and not a constant smooth progression in lesser competitions has done damage to the squad make up. Maybe it's more the fully out between CL campaigns, but just feels like we're chasing every game and making things difficult for ourselves, whereas some games where we can play a full rotated squad, give youth a chance, might have helped us progress the squad. CL demands our best players. So does the league. Awful domestic cup draws the same. We've already made more in CL prize money than Villa would get if they win the Europa League. Yes, trophies are the goal and we have a recent one, they don't. But all this angst everyone has where it seems like every result is treated like a turning point in the club's history is driven by money. There are people not enjoying us playing clubs like PSV and Benfica off the park or looking forward to playing the European champions next week or being in (another) LC semifinal because we might finish 8th instead of 5th. No one would actually care about that except it's the difference between many, many millions and potentially better players. If every week is spent fretting about qualifying for the Champions League and then it's not enjoyed when we're in the middle of it then the odds of finding any joy in modern day football are pretty low. The College Dropout Posted January 23 Share Posted January 23 I'm not belittling Villa - I think they've done tremendously well. But to suggest we would rather be in the Europa League is madness. If Villa had got in the Champions League this season they would've been an even bigger problem for us. They would have a stronger squad than they do now almost certainly. Winning the Europa League is also super tough for PL teams if they are competing in the PL properly. Last year Spurs & Man U gave up on the league in February at the latest. I suspect Villa will go full strength in the PL every week until CL is mathematically secure. Barnes23 Posted January 23 Share Posted January 23 (edited) Champions league qualification should be the goal every season - that is how you really build momentum on a status/financial/recruitment level and do the most that you realistically can to maintain our stated medium and long term ambitions as being something credible.
