NUFC Transfer Rumours

From the BBC…

Newcastle fans were keen to sign James Maddison, but with Tottenham completing the £40m deal, France's Youssouf Fofana has been linked as a potential recruit.

Former Magpies defender Olivier Bernard believes he would be a strong addition to the squad.

Fofana has played 140 times for Monaco and the 24-year-old also has 10 appearances for France to his name.

Speaking on the latest podcast from BBC Radio Newcastle - which was recorded in the pub Bernard runs in Blyth - he said: "Fofana is an attacking midfielder, with not so much creativity but great work rate.

"We compare him to Kante at times because he is hard on the ball and always wants to win possession. He's the type of player you would definitely want in your team and not against you.

"It’s important to see this type of player coming to Newcastle because they would change the dynamic definitely."

Is the link there that Bernard says he’d be for us? That’s what they’re basing us being linked off?

He was asked about it on the Totalsport podcast yesterday, which was broadcast from his pub. It seemed like a nothing throw-away mention.

More interestingly, apparently his favourite drink is a Monaco. He was also totally unable to answer the question about the last five French players signed by Newcastle (he only got ASM and Lejeune).

Actually, The Athletic named him as an option for us back in Jan:

“The most striking element of Fofana’s game is his ball-carrying, with smarterscout giving him a maximum rating for carry and dribble volume — 99 out of 99.

There is guile, too. Fofana is known in France for his ability to play disguised passes as well as a penchant for chop-turning opposition players. He plays more progressive passes than any option in this article, bar Tielemans.

With his Monaco contract expiring after next season and as the player demonstrating the closest similarity to Guimaraes, Fofana is worth considering.”

He’s more of a ball winning defensive midfielder that can get up and down if needed.

There is also a scout report from a year ago comparing him to Tchouameni.

Yeah, much more of a physical ball winner that can pass really well and carry the ball out of tight situations. Going to be a great signing for whoever gets him.

For anyone who didn’t want Maddison due to him apparently preferring Spurs; Big Dom- according to a German journalist- says he would choose Liverpool over Newcastle after talks with his representatives.

Understandable really and a reality check for those who think otherwise.

Hopefully they aren’t an option for him and if we sign him he comes to love the club like others have.

If we sign him, he will come to love the club as others have. Until he’s experienced it, he can’t even begin to imagine it! :smitten:
