Just so lethal, even more impressive considering he is being played out of position to accommodate Gordon.

He's playing in a position the manager has said he's happy to play in despite people saying he couldn't play on the right for years now.

He continues to get into goal scoring positions and finishes with both feet confidently regardless of what side he starts on, and has also whipped in some great crosses from the right side.

Yet people continue to moan about him not playing on the left and want Gordon on the right, when Gordon doesn't feel as comfortable on that side.

I'm happy for Barnes. Knowing he's going to be starting on the right side for the immediate future is giving him confidence and consistency and he'll only get better and better there.

I don't think people will moan as long as Gordon is playing alright. The problem was he was taking Barnes' preferred spot and playing shit.

If it's working itself out, great.

We know what Gordon can do at his best. The best way to get him anywhere near that is to keep him in the one position he is comfortable in. He is not an adaptable player that can be moved around, and it's better that he is aware of that and honest about it with the coaches.

A lot of Gordon's drop off started when he was being moved back and forth to the striker position. He needs consistency in the position he's comfortable in. That's the player he is.

That's a fair enough interpretation and a generous one to him. But the other option was to drop him and play Barnes because Barnes was playing better. Of course you could probably argue (Howe prob thinks this) that we aren't a good enough team to have Anthony Gordon on the bench.

I'm happy Barnes has still been able to perform so well and that's credit to him. And credit to Gordon for improving. But I think it's understandable why people had different views on it.

Wonder if he could play more of a number 10 / second striker kind of role in a more attacking lineup, where he's given a bit more freedom to move around and find those runs and pockets of space.

Could help make the most of his best qualities: His pace, off the ball movement (particularly runs from deep),and finishing off either foot.

Especially with Big Nick up front, Barnes could provide that constant threat in behind when Nick drops deep.

Given he's now at his best for us, should we be looking to sell in January?

To Liverpool for £100 million perhaps? With some luck he might perform poorly there and we can buy him back for peanuts.

You might be on to something here!

I wonder why he doesn't get lauded as much as some across football. He's genuinely a massive talent. His stats show his passing is really well shared in all directions, and our eyes tell us his directness can often bring a goal/success. I LOVED his goal, yesterday.

He also talks very very well, when interviewed. He's a smart lad.

Maybe it's because his appearance is quite vanilla. Like, smart, but not stupid whacky/gasping for attention.

I suppose it benefits us. But he's totally up there with some of the best in this league.

Think part of the reason he doesn’t get the praise he deserves is that his game is relatively simple and he does things that are so clinical. It just gets taken for granted. He’s very close to being the most clinical finisher in the premier league. It’s fucking mad how he doesn’t get more respect

That goal last night was prime Barnes. Brought it down and just went direct. Excellent ball control, speed and clinical finishing.

Reminded me of another left footer from the 80s with the same name, the way he coolly collected the ball centrally, drifted wide and then accelerated knowing exactly the angle to take to get the shot off. Single-minded as fuck once he gets in those positions. For me, along with Hall, Miley and Bruno, he has rapidly become unsellable. You just can't easily replace a finisher like that, not for anything like what we paid for him anyway.

He's a bit like Bowen in that regard. I think there's part of it where they dont look like they should be that good imo. Its also definitely the simplicity, you disregard the skill involved in being able to do it again and again.

Probably the only player I like listening to for interviews. Talks like a normal human,

Barnes shows he is the real deal with his composure decision making with that goal soon as it dropped to him. If that was anyone else in the team they would've run into trouble.

26 goals, zero pens, in 53.5 games' worth of minutes in all comps for us.

Joint second top for non-penalty goals in the CL this year.

30 goals and assists in his final two seasons at Leicester as well. Far more assists than with us (Vardy?). Note also that Leicester were relegated in his final season there. 13 goals and an assist for a relegated team will be up there with the best in Premier League era.

Just for fun and to wind some people up, but filtering Sadio Mane at Liverpool on the left wing, all comps, is 80 goals 33 assists in 15750 minutes, equivalent to 175 complete games. I'm not suggesting for one second that Barnes is the same as peak Mane (I think he'd be automatic starter if he were!), only that 1 in 2 from the wing is very good and you'll have to use Mane level players to get anywhere near.  Barnes managing it for an extended period should get a lot more love and respect than it does.
