You are correct as usual, he needs to be saved.

Be idiotic to sell Barnes - he's a brilliant squad player. Perfect player to bring on if you need a goal.  Best finisher at the club as well.

If you want to sell at the right time, you have to accept that the players contribution to the team cannot be fully replaced at the moment of sales.

Just like Joelinton. I said he should be sold two years earlier if we want to have any decent fees. People disagreed and think he is too valuable to the team. Whilst their points were valid,  two years passed and now we won’t be able to find any suitors for Joe.

So for Barnes - if you really want to stick to the principle and recoup any fees, now is the last chance to do it. If you think he is too valuable to be sold, then you should be prepared that Barnes will likely play for 2-3 more years and then leave for free.

Suppose we sold Barnes and got someone in from Europe, younger with potential of a higher ceiling.

Almost all of the younger signings we've made under Howe have taken time to settle in and spent 6-12 months on the bench barely featuring whilst they get up to speed with the style and system.

Who's going to play and score the goals whilst that happens?

We're quite goal shy in open play as it is at the moment, Barnes accounts for about 20% of our open play goals in the season just gone (fag packet maths so may be a % or two out) - I'm stunned so many people are keen to sell.

If we had other wingers or strikers producing consistent outputs then I could understand it a lot more but I'd not want to sell him in this window, particularly not to Villa where he'd continue scoring 1 in 3 for the next two or three years. It would hurt us and strengthen a direct rival.

This is the strongest argument for keeping him IMO. Barnes is consistent, and he won't be playing back up to Anthony Gordon. That could do wonders for his confidence. The reasons I'm slightly more open to selling him are fairly straightforward.

- He got 16 this year, but more than half of those were in cup competitions, one of which we aren't in next season.

- His best season to date had him at 10 goals in the league, so better than last season, but not drastically.

- We need to get used to selling as a club, and that means doing deals at all levels. It can't just be star players at peak value. It has to be those mid-range players who could be used to facilitate more new faces.

I agree, a move to Aston Villa is definitely strengthening our biggest rival. That aspect does diminish my willingness to see him go, but I also wonder what role Elanga plays next year, because if he does stay and plays regularly, then I could see Will Osula moving to the left and becoming a winger/forward hybrid.

40 goals and assists in about 65 games worth of minutes, while also being shifted about everywhere and dropped numerous times when in good form.

We'd be fucking idiots to sell him for £38 million, especially to a rival for the top 6.

At least one RW

Two LW if we sell Barnes
CM

CB

Two keepers
Two RB if we sell Tino
Backup LB
Striker

That's some rebuild. Mind you we have been linked with about 50 players so far, so who knows?!

If we'd made the CL we wouldn't even be considering it.

I don't want to sell him but we have to become good sellers at some point. The alternative is to just keep all our players until they go for nothing and we don't have money for replacements.

The more he plays the worse he gets. Thsts how it feels with him. Give him a run and he doesn't seem to perform. Come off the bench and he's full of goals. I don't know if stats back that up, but that's the feeling I get from him and might be memory plays tricks.

He's easily our most productive winger. Gordon's cheap goals can fuck off.

Aye, I've thought for a long time it needs to be a minimum of 9 in depending on outgoings tbh.

Massive job for Wilson. In a WC year.

As has been said previously with Barnes, if he's not scoring, he offers very little.

Commercially, I'd be getting shot of him all day long for a sensible offer but do take the point that there's plenty of far bigger issues in this squad at the moment.

Would be a perfect opportunity to raise some funds and the perfect time to sell given his age etc. However, given the state of our attack, he’s probably a must keep.

Bloke is in his prime- I don't get the rational to sell. Willock, Murphy, Wissa - start getting rid of them first before even thinking of selling Barnes

Willlock transfer was agreed and he decided last min he didn't want to go as he had a "sign from god"

Given what happened with losing Isak & Wilson and replacing with two new signings, we'll surely learn from that this year and keep him on. Not a bad player to have up your sleeve just for his numbers if the replacement needs a bit of time or doesn't hit the ground running.
