Barnes was absolutely class. His movement was fantastic and his tight dribbling is better than I realized.

He’s probably one of the smoothest runners with the ball I’ve seen. Sometimes doesn’t appear to be doing much but has a nice ability to drop the shoulder on people and glide past them.

I think he actually needs to be staying next season, now we are guaranteed European football. I don't think we'd get the same quality of player in for the money you'd get for Barnes now.

Add to that there's much more important areas that need to be improved, if we can go into next season with Gordon and Barnes as the Left hand side I'm happy with that.

We'll almost certainly need him if we're trying to battle on four fronts next year.

Hasn't been shouted about as much mainly because of the performance of others, but he worked his fucking socks off. Him and Tino down that left hand side just made them worry all game long. Strong, direct, smart. I've not watched it all back but I'm sure he found Tino on every overlap. If he wanted to get to the line as well he got there. Of course he stepped up.

Before the final I suggested he would be worth starting just because of his end product which can win a match even when the performance isn't great, but it was suggested that his defensive work was slack. That surprised me, because I can't imagine Howe wanting a player who won't pitch in when we are out of possession. I don't watch him that closely, but I would imagine he must be at least fairly hard working if Howe wanted him so badly.

Barring any freak injuries next season, he'll be seeing plenty of gametime and will be an extremely useful asset for us. Good player, just been awkward timing with him so far.

I thought he was excellent on Sunday. Very brave & made good team decisions consistently. Flash might have to wait to get his place back.

He's been a bit up and down on that in his time here. E.g. early on this season he was throwing himself into everything, but in the last couple of months or so has looked half hearted at times. I don't know why but have been assuming it's due to how important and motivated he feels.

Optimistic that with Europe and the additional finances we'll have next season, the squad will look a lot less lopsided and he'll fit in better.

He had a good game, the only thing he got slightly wrong was the ball to Isak for the Kelleher save, even then it wasn't easy and Isak nearly buried it.

And not shooting when he pulled it back for schar

Yep. Barnes LW & Gordon RW gives you more than Gordon LW & Barnes RW if that’s the two you go with IMO.

Would think after that Gordon starts on the bench next game he’s available. He’s not exactly been great last month or so. See how Barnes does.

100% this. It’s Gordon on the left with Barnes a very able deputy who will get plenty minutes next season as we compete on 4 fronts. Murphy will hopefully be the backup RW going forward. Delighted the pair of them paid a huge part in our history.

I'd keep Barnes as the starter on the left wing tbh. Thought his general direct dribbling and aggression were really class.

To be fair to him, I've no idea where Schar was going for that cutback. If you watch it again, all he has to do is stay next to Barnes for a simple tap in but he runs away from the ball and behind Virgil.

If that or the set up for Isak go in then we've walked a third in and it all becomes too easy really. Was better how it all ended anyway. We can hammer the next team we face in a final.

Agreed, I think Barnes was bought as Howe saw Gordon playing on the right wing and Barnes the left. Never remotely worked for either player though. Playing on the left they cut inside using mostly their right foot, whilst playing on the right they cut inside using mostly their left foot. I think Barnes will be on his way in the summer as I can't see him wanting another season mainly on the bench. I'm not sure how that works with PSR wise though as I wouldn't imagine we would get the same fee and he's only ran down two years of his contract.

I thought he kept making some really narrow, almost striker type runs in behind against West Ham and Liverpool and mentioned it in here.

Watching that James Allcott analysis and he certainly did.

Offers something different to Gordon. Certainly more of a goal/assist/try and get the ball into the box threat.

He certainly was more than ok last two games. Might need him as Tuchel said Gordon's injury didn't look good (heard that before and he was playing next game mind and he has a week and a half before next game)

So happy Barnes should get a run of games. He'll be brilliant.

Hope so as we certainly still have a chance of finishing top five. If we can maintain anything near the level of performance we did on Sunday, then we have a great chance, especially with six games at home

He'll be going nowhere cannot see us selling him. And why should we?

He's different to Gordon not as quick but is a threat and intelligent and most importantly he scores goals.

There’s no reason Gordon couldn’t play on the right. Everything he’s good at would be more suited on the other side but it looks like he doesn’t want to play there. Playing Barnes on the right when he comes on makes no sense at all to me, he can’t do it.

Think he will get an extended run at LW even when Gordon is back.

Eddie is big on merit and the fact is that Gordon hasn’t been in the best form and then went and got stupidly sent off, something that was a huge factor in us being knocked out of a very winnable cup competition. Barnes on the other hand was most recently a significant cog in one of the most important victories in the history of the club.

I think there’s still a decent chance Barnes gets moved on in the summer but right now it should be his position to lose.

Gordon is injured after last night, so Barnes has the chance to nail down the spot. Agree that he will likely be moved on in the summer.

Do we need to sign a backup LW in that case?
