Gallowgate Toon
Sometimes, you just need a bit of luck too. Spurs gave Villa a good run around but finishing was poor/injuries happened and Villa were able to work into it.
McDog
Well, just finished watching the game. What do you Brits call it? A hiding? Very disappointing, haven't read any of the thread for obvious reasons. Two beatdowns in a week is depressing but there is lots of the season left and I didn't sense any quit, just players running on fumes. Feel free to disagree but these guys need a holiday. Infatuation Junkie
I expected nowt from this game. We have had 11 out. Had 3 back today but not full 90min fit. A full squad and we roll these over. We have been non stop for ages on bare bones. We aren’t world class mint material yet. It will take a good few windows to have like for like on the bench. Rome in a day as they say. Howe is mint. The full squad have given blood sweat and tears. Milan are going to get proper fucked. Thats all I have. Beren
Tough day, but there will be brighter ahead. Let's focus on cups for a bit. Maybe when we have a few more bodies back we can make a late season surge to try and get a Europa spot. The league is so strong this year.

Yeah basically. At the same time I loved Wilson's interview on Sky where he just looked very calm and determined to get us back on track. He looks ready to lead the line again. Doctor Zaius
I expected a bit more resolve from us today. I know we're knackered but I wanted us to dig in a bit more and potentially catch them on the break but we sort of got caught in between sitting back and pressing high up the pitch and did neither. I think a lot of the chat round fatigue and players knowing we're down to our bare bones has got in their heads a bit. Isak looked fucked from the get go. Mills and Boon
I fancied us today, thought we'd have broken on them but outside of two chances in the first half it didn't happen. On Isak, he's not looked right since he came back from injury. Hopefully with Wilson back we can ease his load a bit

GeordieDazzler
Nice of Vicario and Pickford to basically write our team talks for the return games, when we’ll likely be out of some competitions and not completely running on fumes.

We haven't got anywhere near our intensity away from home this season and getting battered most the time. We were a match for any non top 4 teams last year but more matches, less players and mostly shit or untried players on the bench. He may need to take a chance on them though to rest a few. I had similar thoughts. The passing and movement against Man Utd was exceptional. We looked like a pale shadow of ourselves yesterday.

There were numerous times where Schar and Trippier in particular were gesticulating in frustration up field because they had no one to pass the ball to. Probably a combination of fresh vs tired legs, and dare I say more hunger from the Spurs players than ours. They were probably extremely motivated to get revenge for last seasons result. A lot of focus seems to be about our technical ability to play out from the back but it's something that requires physicality too. If you're not at it from that perspective, it'll fail, because it requires movement from others but also needs the player in possession to be capable of making their own space too. Even City can look ragged when playing out when they're not at their level.

leffe186
Has the smoke cleared? Hope the below isn’t too cunty, apologies if it is. It’s what most people were saying. You got into the CL arguably a year too early and are paying the price. Don’t think it’s fair to blame Eddie Howe, beyond maybe recognizing that your style of play is going to take its toll anyway. Maybe getting the subs wrong but even then who knows how fit the guys coming back actually are, or if you are now down to guys on the bench he really doesn’t trust to do a job? I feel like he knows that better than anyone. I think now you’re seeing what we saw with Trippier. He was always terrific on dead balls and general delivery going forward, but at the top level would get found wanting defensively against the best. Now he’s a few years on and playing more games than he should, and it’s the same thing. I feel like Howe relies on Trippier a lot in general play and that’s why he was played more than he should have been even when you had cover. Now you don’t have cover, and an unfit Son is able to take the piss. 13 hours ago, Infatuation Junkie said: …A full squad and we roll these over… There was some of this in the thread - although some people did push back. Pope obviously, Botman at the back, any other defensive changes? Burn for Schar? Bruno starts, Gordon too, then what? Tonali for Miley and Barnes or Willock for Almirón? Maybe four or five changes? Genuine question. Then we get a full squad as well. Our two best players from the unbeaten team (Van Der Ven and Maddison) and then Bentancur replaces Sarr. Both of us have good benches. I don’t think you roll us over. It would be closer of course. Which brings me to… 15 hours ago, Stottie said: Bad Wilson miss, so it should have finished 4-2. A fairer reflection than 4-1. We looked pretty jaded yesterday and Trippier is one of the worst sufferers, his last few games have been mistake laden and he looks like he has lead legs when up against a fast winger... Don’t really know much about it though so happy for someone to tell me different. It's gamestate in a low-scoring sport, innit. You'd clearly started the brighter but we had the 2 best initial chances in the game and didn't take either, you then go and score from a great move. If one goes in, that changes the complexion of the game dramatically... whether positively or negatively - who knows? The core problem for us isn't necessarily who is out as a genuine first teamer being out (although there are 5 really important players out imo), it's the churn of generally high level games we have with very little options to rotate even in-game while being in 3 competitions where we seem to consistently be playing really tough opposition every few days. Before yesterday, we'd barely made a sub in the previous 5 and were naming 3 'keepers on the bench. Similar to you, energy is a very big factor in our gameplan (tbh, it is for the vast majority of teams) but we know we're not going to be able to do what we want over 90 minutes because there's no actual plan b for the final third of the game. There's also the question as to whether a few of our available lot would even be playing if others weren't injured - I think there are a few playing through more than just knocks. What changes is the fact that the players who faced you yesterday aren't absolutely dead on their feet. It's not so much about hypothetical changes to the personnel, goalkeeper aside. I don't agree that with a fully fit squad we definitely beat you, mind. You're an entirely different outfit to the one we truly annihilated last season. Even a half-fit Son is an incredible opponent when he's full of confidence. You are wrong about Tripps, incidentally. He's been mostly exceptional defensively; he's far more than just a dead ball specialist.

Minhosa
I'm really relaxed about this whole thing, why? - Howe has shown already a brilliant ability to turn around poor runs of form. He will again. - We're another weekend closer to January. - We're another weekend closer to getting some key figures like Botman, Willock etc back. - We've just been howked off two much fresher teams - no Europe and nowhere near as many miles on their legs this season. - We've got through another game without losing any other key players. - We've got lots of the season to go and lots of time to right these wrongs. I guess a huge part of this is about personal context imho. I'm still massively grateful of the takeover, still believe we are years ahead of where we could reasonably expect the squad to be and have to back the owners to get most of the calls right, which they have done to date. With that wider context, I can overlook a Trippier mistake, Lascelles poor show or a tired Schar having a rare off game much more easily. I'm still one of those rarities looking to get to 40 points tbph, anything else at this stage is a bonus. I'm happy to sit back and enjoy the ride. This was never meant to be easy and I'm happy for that too. Nothing worth achieving ever is. It's weeks like this that will make any success, if or when it comes, taste much sweeter. On to Milan. Imagine saying that a few short years ago?
