Problem with Howe assuming all the power is just genuine workload surely. It's all very well but I can't be alone in looking jealously at how other clubs snap up players quickly early in window etc, snap up obscure talent for the future. I want someone working on that full time, Howe should have say and definitely veto fine but doesn't a totally great use of everyones time...

We can appoint transfer get-them-over-the-liners without them being a TD, surely?

i think when howe met rumayyan after our last game, he probably demanded a full or absolute power in the incomings & outgoings. the 2 of them clearly have some difference and howe likely can't work with DoF.

Or he said to Yasir, imagine where we would have finished if we'd signed some cunt in the last 2 years

I’ve always liked the idea of having someone to push back on some of Eddies ideas on recruitment. Not necessarily to pour cold water on every target, but in that two minds are better than one.

also, to have someone there to butt in with a ‘but…psr’ when someone gets carried away.

That's fair, but i don't imagine clubs like to negotiate with a person who doesn't have much authority. Is Nickson able to do so?

howe does seem like a control freak and wants absolute power at the club. not really a bad thing. but i think he will be to us what ferguson was to manu.

Not such a bad thing that!

Yeah, it's a bit cake and eat it for me and a symptom of us doing things backwards; i.e. appointing the manager first. Which is why, as @Big River says, we're still in an era where issues like this are still at least partially accountable to the Ashley administration.

That said, I'm becoming increasingly doubtful about the concept. Do the top clubs operate like this? Or do the top clubs have their visionaries (whether you rate them or not) at the coal face, i.e. Pep, Klopp, Howe, Arteta? The DoF 'culture-setter' role seems more applicable to and more successful at medium-sized clubs at best, to me.

If we're gonna have a Howe then I'd argue we just go all in on the traditional 'manager is the most influential person at the club' structure. It's worked fine so far.

I'd say Liverpool, lesser extent Brighton?, is the model people want to follow in terms of expenditure v success. DoF is crucial to Liverpool's success and interesting to note they brought back their former DoF and others once Klopp said he was off.

I don’t think this is good news. It means that whatever plans Mitchell has made, Howe wasn’t impressed. So what then? Do we start trying to sign a new set of players from today?

No, it just means Howe get who he wants.

But it doesnt mean that at all, thats just pure conjecture.

“It became clear in recent days that a vocal majority of Newcastle United supporters, particularly those who spend a lot of time online pontificating, did not respect my methods, and more importantly, did not respect me. It was at that time that I decided it was best for me and the club that I move in a different direction.”

I think it went something like: Eddie, Tindall and Nickson are sitting in a room discussing targets, Mitchell walks in with his list and hands it to them. Eddie, not even fully turning to acknowledge him says "that's nice Paul, thanks. Anyway..."
