Because that was literally his first contribution to the evening, off a total soft ball from Raisbeck.  Then I think it was his second or third answer where he was going on about how the transfer market must have changed a lot because he hadn't expected it to be so difficult coming here when he did - which didn't exactly make him sound like a European sports director with his finger on the pulse.  Honestly, it would be easy to make him look a lot worse... The main event was most of the leadership team being interviewed on stage together. Eales, Mitchell, Silverstone, COO, CFO. Plus legends later (Cisse) and women footballers.  To be honest I didn't realise most people weren't aware of it. Would've approached it differently if I'd realised it wasn't already being discussed. I must admit I zone out of things during international windows and had no idea anything like this was going on and obviously missed any mention of it
Erikse
4 hours ago, 80 said:  Loads to mention. But basically couldn't avoid going back to the summer and Eddie issues. Literally his first sentence was about how he'd never join a club mid transfer window again. Plus how rotten he was personally as a footballer. Talked about holding hands with Eddie at the boxing in Saudi. Became fixated on needing to drink several pints a day in stack to help boost his own transfer fund, and hoping to get Eddie to join him in the drinking too.  Like, I'm honestly trying to be charitable in thinking he must just be much more of a doer than a talker     Depends on what actually happened that summer, but in many possible scenarios I would probably be thinking the same if I was him. AyeDubbleYoo
I mean, we all knew it was a difficult time to come in. Sounds like he's trying to joke about the timing more than anything else.

But.. I find it interesting that when he actually admits he found it difficult, which is the opposite of blaming everybody else, you complain that aswell for not sounding competent. Whichever route he takes you seem to look to interpret it in a bad way. Edited November 21 by Erikse

McCormick
Super early days and irrational for sure but I can’t shake the feeling that this guy’s just all bluster. Talking about getting pissed and Brenting it up in front of fans isn’t helping either…

I said he blamed others (specifically "their plans, their targets, their structures") in his first answer, not throughout the whole evening. It was just a pretty jaw dropping thing to do in the context of no one looking to relitigate things. Monaco fans seem to think he’s a bit of a bullshit merchant as well. He hasn’t had much time to prove his worth,in fairness so I’m being quite harsh, I know. It's a bit too hard for me to believe he's been in all the places he's been and also just been that guy on stage. So maybe he just presents himself badly. I certainly hope so. SUPERTOON
Fortunately we are going to find out in the relative short term if he’s any good or not. I side with people not being overly impressed with how he has portrayed himself so far. Thankfully we will be able to judge him on his actual job over the next few months or so. We thought Ashworth was the second coming and look how that turned out. He's got January and next summer to prove his worth!
patrone
I just thought he came across ok, was very generic type questions that were asked so he was never going to be on the back foot. Â The joke about buying pints to help with PSR was really just a throw away comment, but he did also go on about his previous jobs and what he thought when he came here. Â People seem to forget we had 1 person doing the role's of the 5 people on stage last night (at least and more) for years and we barely heard a peep from him in all that time
Dr.Spaceman
The trap people fall into with the likes of Mitchell (as they did with Ashworth) is solely laying the blame for any amount of failure at their doorstep. Mitchell is the head of a team working with other teams to achieve common targets. Yes he's accountable, but he's not the sole reason we may not sign anyone or may sign someone who turns out to be a bit shit. It's like people blaming Shola because Kuol went to Hearts or wherever it was, as if the club let Shola Ameobi make that decision on his own  As with Ashworth I think we're putting far too much thought into all of this. He replies with his own honest experience of the first 5 months. "mistakes were made, but we're gonna learn from them and come back stronger" would be a bit of an odd answer to that question, as the question was about him specifically. kingxlnc
Ashworth was very accomplished speaking wise, he sounded like he had a plan and philosophy etc, the centre of the wheel etc. Look how he turned out. Not too great at his role - given the PSR debacle. I'd rather Mitchell stutters his way through press conference embarassingly as long as he is great at his job and brings in great players etc.
