If Thiaw is competent at right back it's a possibility we could see a back 4 of CB's :)

We’ve seen it before at Man City and Arsenal. We’re a bit like Arsenal-lite at the moment imo

It hasn't helped we've had a real mix of nonsense in those games mostly.

I would be surprised if it looked as bad with the 4 being Murphy Tonali Bruno and Hall (Joelinton and Ramsey are also fine in this LM spot) and the 3 being Elanga, Woltemade and Gordon.

Maybe. It wasn’t great last year either, though. Only glimpses.

I’ve just never liked how we try and build from the back in that formation and it always looks a bit disjointed. We’re not a team that wants to build possession patiently as it is and I’m fine with that a lot of the time. But it is noticeably worse when we play with the 3.

I haven't seen the games from last year so fair enough. I just see Ramsey as the left forward against Leeds (one of many examples) and think that the system isn't really at fault here but players just put in areas that simply isn't effective.

I don't think we've seen an optimal use of it yet this year and I don't think that's anyone's fault, just a by product of injuries and schedules forcing rotations.

But Krafthy should be good for a start or 2 if Trips needs resting

I don't mind him as a 5th 6th choice centre back thesedays. But he looks miles off at full back

We paid about the same fee for all 3 of Hall, Livra and Thiaw. I don’t think we paid a premium for any of them, we paid for potential which as we know is the way the market flows these days.. due diligence was obviously done on all of them. That’s Howes way.

I can’t see how a £30m base fee is bad for the potential return on investment you get with these guys, I believe they will make up 3 out of 4 of our starting back 4 when all fit and firing. £90m on base fees isnt bad money for 75% of a potentially pretty elite back line.

I didn’t say it was bad. I said we paid a premium.

Organic fruit has a premium.  Rolls-Royce cars has a premium.

It doesn’t make it bad. But you are paying a little extra… usually for a positive reason.

Premier league to premier league transfers have a premium. Everyone acknowledges that. That premium is because there’s a perceived less risk in those transfers. There’s a bonus PL to PL premium when the player is young, English and players from top 6 clubs often come with a premium. That covers the Lewis Hall and Livramento situations.  Tino in particular has been a massive success and is now an England international. We would struggle to double our money on him because the initial fee had a premium.

Most transfers involving a foreign club and a PL club has a premium.  This is part of the premium we’ve paid for Thiaw. And it seems AC Milan went from wanting to sell and the only buyer being another Italian club at a price point.  To not wanting to sell and the buyer being a PL club. So the price increased - that’s a premium.

I dunno why I’m explaining such a simple concept. People have their narratives and agendas and that’s all they see.

Malick Thiaw on his new chant from fans.......

“It’s great! I don’t know who created it but they did a great job! My friends and family were shocked when they heard it because I’d never had a chant at a club before. They appreciate the love the fans have for me. Today in the physio room, some of our players were singing it to me - one of them was Dan Burn!”

Love it! Seems to be settling in nicely!

What is the chant? Can't say I've heard it.

Is it the Bella ciao song?

Bro I literally said in the second line of my post that I don’t believe we paid a premium and went on to explain why I believe so.

So yeah I don’t know why you’re explaining the concept of premium either [emoji38]

A £30m base fee for any of Thiaw, Hall or Livra has no premium attached.

The players love their songs, don’t they?  Don’t know if it happens at other clubs but I’ve never heard players sing their songs as much as these lot do.  Think it is Bruno’s influence as he is usually the one pushing a player out to acknowledge their song (Joelinton also).  Always feel bad for those players that never really have a song.

It’s what happens when he’s very obviously wrong.

The difference between what was accepted from Como and our own is a literal premium. His value increased €10m without playing a single competitive game anywhere. But ok man.

Its also a ridiculous notion and the only motive can possibly be to somehow downgrade a great transfer and a good transfer window.

Some people want to find negatives in positives and it tells alot about those people.

Personally, I’m not suggesting the transfer is downgraded or the premium is a negative. In truth it’s too early to judge him other than he has bags of talent and ability.

The premium thing to me is just a matter of fact. Isak came with a premium and it was fantastic business. Much better than the JP at £30m that we were close to signing.  Etikite for less than £25m would’ve been a total steal.  He’s tripled in value in 3 years. Minteh quadrupled his value in a year the £8m was a bargain and I thought he had potential to be a £60m player.

That’s the way the market goes, we don’t know the ins and outs of the deal with Como.

£30m base fee for Thiaw? That is not a premium fee, we were not ripped off by anyone. You seem desperate to act like we get mugged off for fees when it’s just not the truth, we literally cannot allow it to happen or we will always get taken advantage of as ‘the richest club in the world’. People in charge are way smarter than me and you on this but that part is obvious.
