I'm not talking about his pass completion rate. I accept that he's got a decent amount of assists. 

 

I just think he wastes a lot of the ball. Hes more than capable of delivering a wonderful cross but I don't think that mitigates the amount of passes/crosses/possession that he wastes. Im not giving him shit per se, but I think we've needed a starting upgrade for a while on the right if we want to kick on to the next level. It was supposed to be Elanga but it's not.

Joelinton did his midfield work very well for 60-70 minutes, and then faded and gave away the ball. All round a positive contribution and a good performance. Elanga is judged on his ability to be an effective winger, close control, beating a man, linking up with his team mates around the box etc and unfortunately he's failed at all of it almost invariably and rather miserably from day 1.

Some players take a wee bit longer to settle in, than others. Elanga will come good - in time. 

I hope you’re right and still believe he can. But just because people are annoyed that a player who cost almost £60m looks like he can’t do the basics, let alone have a real impact in pretty much every game he plays doesn’t make them ‘boo-boys’ and are more than entitled to share concerns on a forum.

Boo-Boys have always been present among wor lot.  Always got to get on the backs of one particular player. Jacob Murphy used to get absolute pelters on here and whilst he wasn't great tonight, he's turned it around and been a key squad member over the last 3 or 4 years.

So you're not allowed to call out a player who consistently offers nothing, a player we seemingly spent a chunk of time, effort and money on? We're all massively disappointed with what we've seen so far, anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves. When you see a 50/60 million pound signing struggle with basic 4/5 yard passes week in week out it's difficult to hold your tongue, particularly on nights like last night. It wasn't his fault that we drew but he added absolutely nothing when he came on. Nobody is excited when he comes off the bench.

Interesting in the games he's started (Villa, Liverpool, Forest, Barca, USG), he's generally looked much better. Alright he wasn't great v Forest, but in the rest of those he was alright to decent.

 

He seems to really struggle to impact the game from the bench, no idea why that is. 

 

Still think it's way too premature to write him off, as many are gagging to do, but it's been a shame that he hasn't hit the ground running.

They've recruited really well, that Xhaka signing has transformed them completely. It would be nice for us to take a punt in Europe more often seeing as our European signings seem to have been very good this season. Don't really understand the obsession with EPL proven players personally but each to their own

He started at Everton and that was his best game and all. Not a high bar, granted :lol:

I don’t know how people can still push this line when we literally just signed two Germans. Unless every signing comes from abroad, we’re obsessed with PL players?

Until he gets a run of consistent starts especially now Tino is back, we're just not going to see it come together anytime soon.

 

Thought it would have been perfect to start him again at home last night, coming off a good performance. I think he would have given Udogie more problems.

 

Udogie was too quick and strong for Murphy who couldn't get anything going against him. Murphy would have been fine to come back in against Burnley, which is a game that should suit him better.

It's a lot easier to succeed when your expectations are survival. A bit like Thomas Frank at Brentford compared to Frank at Spurs. Sunderland are well organised and hard to beat. Beyond that there's not much to them.

Relatively balanced? :lol:

 

Our team includes usually Botman, Thiaw, Bruno, Tonali and Woltemade who came from abroad. That’s roughly half. 
 

Anyway, it doesn’t really matter, we only bring it up when the signings aren’t doing as well as we want. If a winger came from Europe and struggled we would need a different narrative.

I'm a bit concerned about some clumsy touches, but he's shown some glimpses of what he could do once we settle into a style of play. Saw it mentioned on Loaded Mags that Wissa might bring the best out of him as well, and I thought that was a good point.

4 of them are youngsters from a different league to be fair and Isak, through his own doing, is massively off the pace as he didn't touch a ball for months.

The talent level of top level football has been deteriorated for years (post Pep) substituting skill & IQ for graft, this is the unfortunate consequence.

Feel like he needs a run in the team to get some momentum, not like Murphy is pulling up any trees so why not?
