Newcastle United 5-0 Crystal Palace (16/04/25)

Recommended Posts

Before last night, I thought I'd misheard a stat that said we'd won 18 of our last 23 games, and it must just be 18 unbeaten.

Nope it was right, and its 19 Wins in our last 24 games now, and our last draw was the 3-3 with Liverpool up here.

Unreal run we are on, but, arguably at the right time of the season.

This season all feels a little unreal at the moment and things have really come together for us at the key points of the season.

The Villa match is going to be a slogger of a game.

They’ll be mentally jaded after the PSG game. Our big guns had the luxury of coming off early. But yeah should be some game. 3 points please :indi:

One of my lowest points as a supporter was when an @Alan Pardew-led Palace crushed us 5-1, and pards trying to be the big man and be nice about it in the post-match interview

This win counters that day and its lovely to see pards being in a state where getting an invitation from talksport makes his month and palace being back to being shite. Checked their board and they seem to dislike us as much as everton/villa. Fuck em

Did Palace fans reel off their hipster St Pauli-esque continental chants songbook last night? Couldn’t hear them.

I thought they were pretty good despite the numbers and the score

I think the sample applies the other way though. I don't think it's entirely luck for a striker to step up and hit it hard with accuracy from 12 yards. Adding complications to the run up is adding opportunity to fail, and we seem to see these kind of fails fairly regularly, and they're embarrassing.

There must be analytics on this stuff confirming Pata is correct. Too many players are adopting this approach for it not to be the case. Personally hate it and it makes it even harder for the keeper than it already is. The stop start ones should be banned I reckon.

Like everything though. Coaches and keepers will adapt to it. Like Pope did last night.

He isn’t very good at saving pens historically I don’t think. Even his old man says his brother is better at them  but FWIW. He stopped Toney’s run of consecutive pens when he didn’t flinch for his ‘look at the keeper’ slow run up.

It was reckless by Pope, he committed and missed taking out their player. You just can't do that. He didn't need to do that either BJL would have cleared it.

The ref must have seen that and judged it not to be in the moment.

VAR shouldn't intervene unless it's a clear and obvious error, the issue for VAR would be whether Pope got a touch on the ball or not, there was an angle where it looked like he did and others where it looked like he didn't.

They shouldn't have intervened because it wasn't clear and obvious whether he got the ball or not and when the ref reviewed it he wasn't shown the angle where it looked like Pope got something on the ball.

Remember that down in the concourse that day there was a group of lads chanting about ISIS and the IRA. A particularly grim day.

I feel Pope is pretty good at penalties, I'm sure he's won us a couple of shootouts and he definitely won one at SJP when he was at Burnley

I've got more confidence in him saving a penalty than any other keeper we've had I think (although remember Darlow saving 2 in one game)

I don’t think Pope got the credit he deserved for that pen save at the time last night - the focus seemed to be on Eze. I suppose that’s the issue with those slow walk pens and baiting the keeper to move. If it goes wrong it looks terrible. I don’t think that little movement Pope did just before the kick was an accident and Eze has bought it.

I just think it’s strange to invent a new and complicated approach to something which is already really easy for the attacker.

At the risk of sounding like my dad, you really just need to hit it hard and on target. The silly jump run-up seems like an ego thing or for players trying to show that they have “aura” (as the kids say).

Ivan Toney had the best approach. Slow run up, wait for the keeper to move and put it where's he isnt. Even if the keeper doesn't move you just put it either side of him.
