KaKa
Looks so far off his typical dynamic self. Can't even remember what the knee injury was, but it was the first long term injury he'd suffered for years I think. Would be typical if it's ended up robbing him of some speed and mobility right after we bought him. Hopefully it's just a matter of him taking a bit longer to shake the rust off after the long layoff. So far, not so great.

If we did value him at what we eventually paid, then we were lowballing them and it didn't pay off. He could've still got injured obviously but a full summer could've at least had him up to speed tactically. I don't think we were ever going to get him unless Isak left, at which point the valuation changed. I believe Wissa was identified as a proven PL goalscorer who would be definitely be available to us in the event we lost our own proven PL goalscorer. So he wasn't a panic buy; he was our planned-for 'break glass in case of emergency' signing if Liverpool stumped up.

You could be right, but I assumed he was Wilson's replacement personally, especially since I'm pretty sure we were chasing him before the Isak stuff kicked off. I'd be fascinated to know what our initial vision was for the strikers' department tbh. Obviously it would've been Isak and another, but whether that was someone theoretically ready-made, like Wissa, or a player to be developed, like Woltemade, I dunno. But as soon as it was likely that both would be gone I think it was more about just re-tooling the whole department rather than 'X to replace Isak' and 'Y to replace Wilson'. I've always been convinced Joao Pedro was our first choice and him going to Chelsea was the turning point of our whole summer. Even if Isak still goes, we at least hold some cards rather than having our bargaining positioned weakened a little bit more seemingly every passing day. I think it's a minor miracle we got £130million out of Liverpool given Isak doing everything he could to depreciate his value, and the fact we couldn't do shit in terms of incomings. Holmesy
As fans, I think we underestimate the time it takes to get back up to full speed, confidence and effectiveness after a long-term injury like he suffered. He's has a couple of months playing with his new teammates whilst trying to regain full match sharpness. I reckon he'll come good if he keeps getting into goalscoring positions. It's not like the whole team is playing well and he's sticking out. Edited January 20 by Holmesy

It's not like the whole team is playing well and he's sticking out. I think he's made a rod for his own back by actually looking sharp and scoring a couple as soon as he came back. He was dreadful against Man City and looked miles off the pace, in fact he looked very much like someone struggling for sharpness following a long layoff. Was just weird that it was almost a delayed reaction.

It would make sense - stamina is something you build over time whereas natural freshness would be a normal result of an imposed rest. It’s such fine margins anyway - if he had put away those 2-3 good chances in recent games (the kind he regularly put away for Brentford), we’d all be waxing lyrical. Tough crowd (and I include myself in that).
GOTONEW
Talk of us ditching him after half a season is absolute nonsense. Unless behind the scenes he's a turbo-tit He's going to be brilliant for us, and his suspect form (last few appearances) is just bad timing coupled with the return from injury. Miercoles
Watching live that was an ugly goal all around with a signature Joelinton move of eating shit as he kicks the ball and then a scuffed shot from Wissa. I feel a bit more generous on second look though, Joe does well to sort his feet out for the pass and Wissa putting it back across the keeper who had already committed was class, even if he scuffed it a bit. Newcastle Fan
Much better today with pressing the other team, last few games he played he was not putting in much effort into that, hopefully he can build on this for Villa.
