And he can do all this being the lone 9. Having one of the CMs run through central will help too. Like during Man City era of their false 9, it was multiple different runners from deep going beyond that scored.

I believe Tonali would be exceptional at it, but we need him on the defensive side, so it’s either a defensive CM, or keep Tonali deep and get someone who can make those runs forward.

I think he’d be an ideal 9 for us in a 4-2-3-1 system with someone really creative behind him or even someone like Morgan Rogers who will push on past him.

I still reckon Howe will get it right with him in time though. Hes got too much quality not to be successful.

Our game is too vertical for that to work reliably.  It’s too much running.

It worked for City because they hemmed teams  deep which made deep runs less intensive for midfielders.  Ours have to do a lot of running as it is.

I mean provided he doesn't fall of a cliff he's already been successful

15 goals and 5 assists in the league (which I don't think is wildly outlandish) come May would be a successful first season.

(This part isn't aimed at you)

Some of the discussion around him drives me a bit mad tbh. The midfield around him at best (granted it's been much better the last 2-3 weeks) has been highly dysfunctional this year all the while he's acclimatizing to a new country and league.

If I hadn't watched any of the games I'd think with the way people talk in this thread he's on 2 goals or something and miscontrols every touch.

I guess by successful I meant he’d have a career like Ba, Isak, Cisse etc. Not that he’d eventually leave because he isn’t suited for the league or a no10 or whatever seems to get thrown at him now.

I don’t think he could have started much better given age and experience.

He's simply not in that no 9 position enough, was infuriating the amount of crosses we did for last 35-40 mins (this includes ET) and he was not in the box.

He looked absolutely knackered to be fair

I’m with you, find it odd that people are writing him off or saying he doesn’t suit us.

I think this time next year hell be much more integrated after a full pre season under his belt and us knowing how to utilise him better. Good to see Howe experimenting yesterday.

Along with the wingers being prepared to come inside and link up more, which there are signs they are doing.

But we also have many other outfield players. It shouldn’t just be down to one lone person to be in that box, the opposite winger should be right in there too and one of the CMs (unless it’s a fast counter and quick delivery, in which case it would only be played if someone was there).

Not sure I can see another 8 league goals. Especially with Wissa back and him possibly playing more as a second striker/10 behind him and/or spending more time on the bench.

That said, if he does play that role a bit more. I think he can start getting more assists, for sure. Should have had 2 yesterday and his dummy for Tonali’s penalty shows how clever he is with his play.

He’ll get better as the team evolves around him and he continues to improves with age and experience.

There were a couple of old pros on the radio the other day talking about Sesko and Gyokeres. Saying for foreign players, you almost need to allow a year of 18 months before you can form a solid opinion one way or the other.

I think Woltemade hit the ground running and exceeded expectations with his goalscoring and is now a bit of a victim of his own success.

Any chance of shooting when you’ve got a straight forward chance in front of goal?

It was a chance. Not sure it was straightforward. The defender right behind him seemed to inhibit his ability to swing a leg at it, even if he hadn't tried to take a touch.
