Everyone will go mental and overreact but that was a largely decent performance that was completely undone by Kieran Trippier getting absolutely annihilated by Dango. I actually think, by our admittedly low standards, that second half was one of our best attacking performances in a while. Elanga looked dangerous, Bruno kept things moving, tons of energy from Osula and Woltemade got into some nice spaces. But that was all undone by the fact Trippier just couldn't deal with Dango.

There’s truth in that but can’t get past how inadequate we are in creating chances. It isn’t just the finishing I think we are lack the kind of player(s) to open teams up and score. Clumsy header from a corner and a penalty… neither Wissa nor Woltemade look like they can provide what we have lost; Osula, well, he definitely is quick is about the best I can say.

We are really missing Tino, as we did earlier in the season when he was out.

We are, but your RB being out shouldn’t result in what we are currently seeing.

4th, 7th, 5th, and a cup win followed by this season would suggest that by definition it's a blip in the record. Plenty of mitigating factors beyond "every problem must mean change the manager" as well

Yeah fair enough, but it can also be interpreted as the beginning of a downward spiral. Many of the players who have been central to success of the Howe era look jaded or past their best, the new players who were brought in haven't lived up to expectations and we can expect to lose at least one key player this summer (likely Tonali and/or Tino).

Football works in cycles and this squad has run it's course. People who are much better informed and smarter than me will decide whether Eddie is the right man to oversee the rebuild, but one thing is for sure we absolutely can not afford to squander another summer window. In my opinion, he deserves to see out this season at the very least

3 goals at home to Brentford is really worrying like. Not sure you can call it an overreaction.

Especially when the teams we have not been able to win against have a tonne missing too. They were missing Shade today who is maybe their best player. No Bruno F or Mbuemo when we played Man U. Villa missing half their team too.

I've seen enough of supporting Newcastle over the years to know Howe is still the man. Very much so. And to anybody mentioning/wantingMourinho, I'll guarantee you'll be wanting him sacked after 6 months. Embarrassed by the booing as well.

Totally agree, we have deficiencies going forward, but Tino’s ball carrying and athleticism really help.

Whew. That did have a bit of an end times feel in the stadium almost from the start

I consider the regulars in that area quite a reasonable and sober minded bunch. Were even they revolting?

Strawman. Nobody sensible wants Mourinho.

I wasn’t in the corner today. I didn’t really hear a lot of revolting, it more just felt a bit miserable and doomed

What’s your proposed solution then?

Oh I'm just trying to understand the rules.

If the team don't perform and I choose to discuss it, on a football forum no less, that makes me a keyboard warrior and a cunt apparently.

I praise the team when they play well and ask questions when they don't, which last time I checked, is called being a fan.

But according to you THAT isn't allowed here...

Quite sanguine about today. Haven’t had a drink so actually watched the game with clear goggles. Thoughts:

Brentford were crisper and more incisive from the start. Probably in part to their lighter schedule, but also the coaching. They knew their roles, they didn’t panic, and played the game perfectly.

We started like a lot of games. Slow, ponderous, piss poor passing and combinations, but when Sven scored I thought we’d started hitting our straps. Wissa misses in the goalmouth scramble at a point that if that goes in for 2-0, we go on to win comfortably.

Then Brentford got clever. Target the old man at right back with no legs. I don’t hate Tripps; he’s a club hero and is out there giving it his all. However, he’s not PL level three times a week player any more.

Tonali dropped a bollock to kick start that second goal. His really sloppy pass had us on our heels again and they get the pen.

I didn’t understand withdrawing Willock - his runs had been one of the few positives so presuming he’s felt something muscular?

Second half was carnage. Before the pen we’d been underwhelming but genuinely thought when Bruno knocks it in we do a Leeds and go on and win it. Turns out Outtarra does the Aaronson role and we’ve used our Get Out Of Jail Free card back in January. No comeback and let the recriminations begin.

The PL looks like it’s getting away from us. The gap to the CL sides is probably insurmountable and with our patchy form and away schedule I wouldn’t say EL or ECL are even in our gift. I’m at Villa Park next week and can’t say I’m particularly looking forward to it, although I think it might be two tired sides slugging it out with whoever can land that killer goal first. As for winning the UCL, yep, it’ll be after I win the Euromillions jackpot.

For me it’s get to the summer and reboot. It still means Eddie, but it means more ruthlessness, structure and future focus, basically the total opposite of summer 2025. The whole squad needs a lot of work to get back to what we need and playing to our best attributes. At this point if that means a couple of sacrifices being made to do it - so be it. The Krafth, Trippier roles - out, either promote youngsters or buy youngsters. Willock, Osula - cash in whilst we can. Tonali, Gordon - don’t want to be here, cheers for your service but time to get big bucks in and reinvest. Pope and Ramsdale, time for the upgrade.

It needs Suds working magic and Wilson doing deals fast and effectively. It doesn’t mean dithering and playing out transfers via Romano, Ornstein and that weird bike seat sniffer Jacobs.

It needs Hopkinson and PIF making a statement - the training ground and another major sponsor. Time to back the chat up, not spit corporate babble shite.

Its felt everything a transitional season should. Up, down and everything in between. It’ll get better but there’ll still be bumps. However we can’t have another next year. Time to get the planning rolling.

Agree that a lot of the squad has run it's course, which is why I think it's clear we're in a transition season as well as having all these extra games.

You can definitely interpret this season as the beginning of a downward spiral but it would be the last conclusion I'd come to when you look at all the mitigating factors and Howe's record until now personally.

I agree with you but fixing the attack is going to be a process. Second half today was an improvement. It’s going to probably take 12-18 months to get attack functioning anywhere near like what it was. Sad reality is what we have lost is one of the Top 5 strikers in the world and he’s been replaced with a bunch of players who are most definitely in the category of ‘probably good but not elite’ with the hope that some of them (e.g. Woltemade could one day become elite).
