Newcastle United 2-3 Brentford (07/02/26)

Recommended Posts

Really ponderous. We just look like a tired squad, tired physically and maybe tired of playing together. We are not seeing the best of any player now, and because everyone is nervy, mistakes are more common than ever.

Ultimately it comes down to just how bad our forwards have been and how badly they’ve been integrated into the squad. We have zero presence up front, and zero dynamism to get in behind. It leads to glacial passing sequences and no end product. If we don’t score via transitions, we are hopeless.

No need to change the manager yet, he’s certainly earned plenty of time. But we will have to completely overhaul things in the summer. Several of these players should be nowhere near our first team by August. If they still are, we are completely fucked.

As for this year, let’s just win the CL.

3 goals at home to Brentford is really worrying like. Not sure you can call it an overreaction.

It’s quite simple though that today it’s down to being a bare bones in defence and having no other RB option. Nothing we did defensively was bad - apart from three occasions where Dango put Trippier on toast.

Oh I'm just trying to understand the rules.

If the team don't perform and I choose to discuss it, on a football forum no less, that makes me a keyboard warrior and a cunt apparently.

I praise the team when they play well and ask questions when they don't, which last time I checked, is called being a fan.

But according to you THAT isn't allowed here...

Nah it’s cool, but the way you phrased it triggered something in me.

Last thing we need is negativity right now. All the best

The other bloody frustrating thing about tonight (that just seems to have been glossed over) is I am fairly sure PGMOL will rule VAR should have intervened on the Brentford penalty. VAR judged it a non-deliberate handball, and as the rules stand you can’t give a non-deliberate handball if the arm is in to the body. If the VAR had given deliberate handball - judging Murphy was bringing his arm in to block the ball - then it would have been a penalty. But as VAR has interpreted (according to the PL Match Centre) it doesn’t meet the threshold for a penalty and they’ve got it wrong.

Disappointed with their 3rd goal. We get back into game. 2-2, we can win this, 15 mins to go. Poor goal to concede.

No chance of Top 6. 7th possible. Even if we finish midtable. Howe gets to start next season. We can sell 2 high value talents perhaps and do a full rebuild. We have bar to spend in summer. No Europe, I fancy us to get top 4.

The amount of times our CB's won headers and it went to one of their midfielders in acres of space was infuriating

And our midfield don’t either don’t anticipate or watch the opposition take the ball away from them - been happening for a while now. Our lack of bite is awful.

This is where we absolutely need a proper DM, someone that absolutely eats that ball and/or smells the danger is on their player in an instant stopping that simple ball over the top being played

Feel slightly less annoyed with Howe since watching the highlights and the details. I was frustrated at the match but I didn't realise how soft their penalty was and how bad Pope does on the winner.

Obviously the sheer number of mistakes made by Murphy and Trippier as well.

I think we were unlucky to be playing a team as well coached as Brentford. They seemed to have an extra player in defence and  in attack.

And in midfield.

As a general extension of this, if there's a stat for second balls contested/won I'd wager we're near the bottom, we've been soft as shite around loose balls for ages

If I honestly see Trippier on the team sheet again then that's me finished. I know, I'm a drama queen.

I have no idea who people are expecting to play instead of Trippier

Some kid from the reserves that lose every match?

Thats the reality we’ve left ourselves in.

Thiaw if we must play 4-3-3

Murphy if we play 5 at the back

Both options.

Even these are highly questionable though, Murphy is a disaster waiting to happen and I don't think we have any knowledge that Thiaw is a good fullback. We also don't have a RCB to come in for him.

I know you could argue that starting Trippier is so bad that any alternative is better.
