Everybody stayed back at the end of Dalglish and Gullits seasons, rousing reception - didn't turn up the rest of the season or the start of next

Half empty for Sir Bobby in 2000/01 (the never mentioned one) - started the next season vastly improved

Half empty for Sir Bobby 2003/04 - nothing got better

There was about 1,000 people left for the mackems lap season before last and they've been on the up ever since

Really makes no difference.

If it doesn't make much difference then it's probs best not to act like a pathetic little bairn then, eh.

This is how the mackems seen their team off to the Play Offs last season. This was their lap of honour for their last home league game of the season after a terrible run of form at the end of the season. Went on to win the Play Offs. Players aren't as arsed about stuff like that as people think.

Last day of the season at home is always the chance to show you appreciate the efforts even if not everyone was good enough. We played shit against Everton last time round although in the end we still got UCL so everyone was on a high regardless.

I won't be there this time round, but if I was I would still want to clap them off. Just feels petty not to do it unless you think they've been purposely playing badly rather than just not being up to it.

Aye it's been a disappointing season but the players have given us a respectable Champions League campaign, a cup semi final, and played more games than most teams in Europe, with a much weaker squad than the other names in the same ballpark.

We've fallen short on ability and results in the league, but it's been far from half arsed unlike other teams in the past.

what, like the effort in both the derbies. It's not petty if you decide you're not up to clapping them off

I don't think the players enjoy going round the stadium after a loss away from home, but they still do it. This falls into the same bracket for me. I don't expect everyone shares that opinion, but that's my personal take.

Absolutely be staying. They’ve been shite this season but I’ll always be grateful. I think loads won’t say though, as daft as that is.

Awful kick off time like which won’t help.

It's pretty much the same group of lads and staff that won us our first cup in a generation and provided us with the opportunity of a knockout game against Barcelona

The same group of lads and staff that have got us in the Champions League twice and a runner up in the League Cup and another semi final only to be beaten by Man City

The same group of lads and staff who were on the verge of relegation before their collective effort. Trippier, Bruno, Dan Burn - are you saying these lads don't deserve a lap of appreciation?

Thankfully some of us haven't been blessed with such a short term memory and haven't become spoilt

They got their just rewards for their efforts last season. I'm not saying they don't deserve their lap of appreciation, I'm saying I'm not sticking around to applaud this seasons efforts, because I don't rate it.

And spoilt, aye that's me silly little man

I’ll be clapping them… from my comfy recliner .. surrounded by brown ale bottles and salt n vinegar Pringles. Thinking of wearing Tena men so I don’t even need to get up for a piss.

I think it's nice to stay and nice if that takes place within a positive atmosphere. I have always stayed even when the atmosphere has been listless. But I don't think you can really bemoan anyone who leaves regardless of the circumstances and I find all the comments about fans being grateful or spoiled or entitled or whatever kind of ludicrous and divorced from the current state of the game. It is a sport played by millionaires, owned by billionaires and largely captive to their whims. And it is still ultimately funded by the people who watch and engage so you can take your choice in my opinion. I also don't think there's a great deal of distinction between this and other disappointing seasons when it comes to some players not doing the basics or seemingly wanting away so for me it's more about courtesy and a kind of groping sense of camaraderie rather than a gesture of thanks for the effort.

Staying or going?

Going will send the appropriate message. Let them walk around a sparsely populated Stadium.

Give your head a wobble, stupid thing to even think.

This will be my first time taking my 10 year old boy to a Newcastle game. We live in Bristol. He supports us because of me. He had joy at Carabao last year, then heartache last summer when we lost the *Traitor to our cousin’s team. There’s so much pressure on young kids to choose Liverpool, Man City or Arsenal. But he’s stuck with the Toon because I tell him the fans are the best in the country. Loyal, supportive, reasonable and not expectant like fans of those other teams.

I appreciate the season hasn’t been the best but bloody hell guys don’t let us down! Support Eddie and the boys and play your part in the next generation learning what true loyalty and support is!

Win and there will be a good number stay behind, lose and there won’t be.

Such is the fickle nature of football fandom.

That's beautiful mate. Prepare him for disappointment. 😁
