ponsaelius Posted Monday at 18:06 Share Posted Monday at 18:06 Some people don't like it but one of the very good things about football is a much weaker team can get a result purely through organisation and a bit of luck. You don't get that with a high scoring sport like basketball for example.

Wouldn't be surprised if Uruguay manage it. Haven't seen too much of Saudi of late but they upset Argentina in their first game last tournament, so goodness knows what could happen there even, if Spain are this passive. Unbelievable Posted Monday at 18:10 Share Posted Monday at 18:10 Hard to fathom that a team where half the players hail from a ten mile radius from where I live has held Spain to a goalless draw at a World Cup
Keefaz Posted Monday at 18:10 Share Posted Monday at 18:10 Changed my mind a bit on the expanded format. You might occasionally get thumped like Curaçao, but games like this are great.

The teams have got nearly a week off to prepare for the next game while we still have loads of games each day.

AyeDubbleYoo Posted Monday at 18:30 Share Posted Monday at 18:30 It’s pure elitism saying these smaller nations shouldn’t be allowed in. Some great scenes come from it. Occasionally.

Can’t not like that really. I didn’t mind it much, but still am likewise more in favour of it now for those reasons - it is the ‘world’ cup I guess ultimately. Also too much of something always eventually leads to the fun being diluted, but in this case it’s only a week longer and the games are more condensed/timings are so varied, so will choose to skip more anyway. The expanded format creates life-changing memories for fans who previously would never have had the opportunity to participate. From a selfish perspective, it's also a lot more fun for fans from places that were previously the 20th-32nd best countries at the tournament, because they get to play more/go into more games with the chance of winning. I think that's a perfectly fine trade off in exchange for the best teams having to trudge their way through some "meaningless" matches before the knockouts start. And as Spain has shown us, those matches may not be quite as meaningless as you think... Edited Monday at 19:01 by oldtype
Wolfcastle Posted Monday at 19:02 Share Posted Monday at 19:02 Its fine in the numbers we were accustomed to and it is part of the fabric. But not at least one of these games every day. The resulting pattern of football gets old quickly compared to the alternative.
