Guest Moe-Ali
Geremi Ready For Captain's Call By Craig Hope MAGPIES midfield star Geremi says he is ready to captain Newcastle United at Bolton this weekend after admitting it was an "honour" to skipper the Geordies in their last two games. The Cameroon international wore the armband at Hull on Wednesday before leading the Magpies to victory in their final pre-season fixture against Sampdoria on Sunday. And it now looks likely that the 28-year-old will again lead out the black and whites at the Reebok Stadium in Saturday's season-opener, a responsibility the former Chelsea ace admits he is relishing. "It is a huge honour to captain a big club like Newcastle United, even for just one game," he said. "But more importantly against Sampdoria, it was very important to win the game going into next week's game at Bolton. "Of course I would like the job on a full-time basis and I feel I have the qualities to do that. "It is important as a captain to lead the team inside and outside the dressing room and on and off the field. "It is a full-time position and you have to take responsibility in all areas. I have done it for my country and I could do it here. "It wouldn't be a big problem for me to do the job as captain. "But the decision will be the manager's decision and his alone." United new boys Alan Smith and Mark Viduka both made their Toon bows against the Serie A side, and Geremi says players of their quality are key if the club is to realise its undoubted potential. "I was pleased with them both," he told the Evening Chronicle. "You need great players like those two on your side if you want to do well. "We have big ambitions this year and the aim is to club together very quickly." http://www.nufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10278~1085811,00.html
Zero
It also seems like Steven Taylor won't be automatic first choice this season. Or else he should have the armband.

Guest Pie
It also seems like Steven Taylor won't be automatic first choice this season. Or else he should have the armband. Taylor is a young lad with a hell of a lot to learn. When he has done that then he can think about captaincy. In he meantime he has a struggle on to get in the side. Thats how it should be. STM
As far as i'm concerned the second Allardyce was confirmed as manager, Steven Taylor was never going to be captain. In fact i'd be very suprised if he started most games at centre back when everyone is fit.
TRon
Geremi seems just the sort of character to make an ideal captain; committed, great pro, and a player with enough ability to command respect in the dressing room. Good choice IMO.

And I too like the idea of Geremi being captain.
Guest black
Does anyone else get the feeling that the special one is going to look at what Geremi has become for this club at some point this season and wonder the hell why he didn't play him more often? olliemort
Voted Given. He has to get it!He has everything, proven commitment, being here for the rough times and stuck by us when he could have easily left!Proven ability has being one of our top players over the last 5 years!I saw Geremi is the most popular by far.I like him, think he will be a top player for us but hes only just arrived in the door. Dr Venkman
gotta be geremi, pointless having a keeper captain imo
Dokko
Geremi emerging as a fans favorite for the honour? Well i wouldn't be too disappointed with that, he's clearly a stable character, who's got plenty of experience and has done the job before. Also this club is perfect for him, not too big like Chelsea, not too small like Boro, i think a better choice than Taylor or Barton, who are were my lead options before Geremi signed on. Aside from the sentimental "he's been here ages, like!" factor, Given really doesn't have any of the factors needed to be a captain. Captain has to organise the team, be it vocally or through his actions. You want your captain in the thick of the action at all times, which is why CB's and CM's generally make the best captains. Keeprs in general aren't suited to being captains, much less so Shay who's not very vocal at all.
Tisd09
I wouldn't complain as Geremi as captain. There are not too many stand out candidates, the ones that we could name we could question in someway. I would go with Geremi as club captain and then Nicky Butt as his deputy. Taylor is not ready yet, I would like to see him just carry on and progress as a player 1st. Would not surprise me one bit to see him captain at some point over the next few years. Parky
It should be Cacapa no?
Guest Magpiecn
Taylor may be even not the first choice next season, much less be the captain. This time can test Sam's intelligence to choose the suitable captain.
Rich
It should be Cacapa no? Doesn't speak any English. Wouldn't be ideal.
Shak
It should be Cacapa no? Doesn't speak any English. Wouldn't be ideal. Also not a gauranteed starter and injury prone.

Shak
YOu're all just saying Geremi cause you can't think of anyone else. Not particlularly cap material is he? Seems the best bet of who we have at the moment. Obviously if we had a blatantly outstanding captain material player on our books we'd all just vote for him, but we don't. Who would you suggest then, apart from your previous terrible suggestion of Cacapa?
Rich
Name a better (English-speaking) alternative and we'll talk. Seems ideal to me: thoroughly professional, has been captain of his country, speaks two languages, looks likely to start every game, bags of experience at all the highest levels, has been our star performer in pre-season, probable central position...
