João Pedro - Chelsea Agree Deal With Brighton (Ornstein)
High Five o replied to 54's topic in Football
If I recall correctly, Wilson got injured and we decided to go all out an a CF in Isak instead of Pedro. -
I guess the reason I thought he was number 1 target is that we have history there and we've made a clear attempt to sign him again. But yes, there's no proof that we havent stalled making an increased offer because we have other irons in the fire that are our actual preferences. I'm sceptical that's the case though as I don't imagine any selling clubbing not leaking our interest in the hope to agitate further interest. The news about the Trafford, Pedro and Elanga bids wouldn't have come from our side. The above point probably negates the need to answer the second part, but for the sake of discussion, by all accounts Brighton rejected 1 maybe 2 of our offers. Of course Chelsea could and probably would have been a threat no matter, but it surprises me - on the assumption he was our number 1 target - that we hadn't at least agreed on a fee at any point.

Think we’ll get a here we go tomorrow or Tuesday for this one

I though we pulled out to sign Isak, but can't really remember. -
Disgustingly clinical from Kane. Flamengo punished horribly there.

Honestly can’t remember what happened with the Watford one now. Did Brighton just outbid us? -
Well, I am hoping for some example. Well you just said we need quality player Quality players cost a lot of money. We are not spending more than 10-15 million on a striker, if we get Gk, RCB and RW.
-
Bit too soon to say whether he's being let down, far better to make that judgement when the window closes It's not even July yet, plenty of time left
-
Would be fun with a new name. Guehi, Elanga, Trafford and Pedro has been going on for while now so an update on them doesnt make the heart beat very fast
-
Just a casual: “Throw in £350m of asset sales and the women’s team and they have nothing to worry about in PSR terms”. So if they hadn’t used their bent loopholes they’d be fucked?
-
That’s the theory. But the best transfers in the PL are almost always for players bought from abroad. Even the most expensive PL to PL transfers are sketchy. Later in the Window is best for foreign signings imo. Less options to sell for the selling club.
-
Based on nothing at all I feel like this might work out for us. Plan B or C or whatever we’re on might involve a little more risk but I back us to identify talented players.
-
Most of the anger I have isn't about missing out on Joao Pedro - I don't like him or think he's particularly good + don't think Pedro/Delap/Gitten improve Chelsea - but it's the pattern of repeatedly embarrassing ourselves with these transfer sagas. Even the one we're buying, Trafford, has basically taken a year. The one positive is that maybe our lot are finally forced into turning attention to the continent.

When did he turn us down the first time? -
I think as you elevate to higher heights the pool of players that improve you naturally reduces. I also think because of FFP, unless you have a very vast, skilled & experienced scouting network that are capable to find diamonds in the mud - you then have a "filter" that suggests PL proven players and all of a sudden the pool becomes very short based on what is affordable and what other clubs are being allowed to do financially. That all being said, I'd find it hard to believe Howe wouldn't take a calculated punt on someone unproven if it comes to it, as he has clearly proven he is capable of getting the very best out of players. What is interesting is Mitchell's criticism of the policy - which may be right from financial standing - but from a footballing one absolutely isn't. Howe doesn't control the finances...

Aren’t most of them a bit shit, palmer aside? -
Go in for one of Chelsea's other 37 forwards?

Have we ever been turned down twice by a player before? -
I think we need to blame Mitchell here, draw a line under it and see what this week brings.
-
Best thing it’s that this is over quick
-
Game on again, 2-3

We’ve been after people like Trafford, Elanga and Pedro for ages so I wouldn’t automatically assume there’s a long list. The Guehi thing last summer also suggests that.
