If we don't sign anyone it's because we've exhausted every possible avenue, a markedly different approach to that which the club previously adopted. He's an improvement on Kraft, Manquillo and can cover CB, presumably better than Lascelles and is 10 years younger than Fede. He'll play loads even if he isn't in our best 11.

He's no longer the player he was at the end of his Liverpool days. Statement signings are either young players who are highly sought after or elites / borderline elites in their prime. He is neither. Still a great player and a cracking signing for Villa though.

Don't know if it's just me, but I'm not a fan of letting sentiment hinder progress. If we find the perfect site for a world class training facility it shouldn't matter whether it's in North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Durham etc
