Unfortunately when they were fabricating some 'quotes' from a 'source' they left this shite in. He is highly rated by key members of the Newcastle hierarchy and a source close to the former England and Middlesbrough boss said: “It’s the worst kept secret in football right now that Newcastle want Steve. Negative football, playing to limit the opposition rather than getting at them and causing problems sounds familiar? Heres a hypothetical scenario to consider: Newcastle appoint Steve McClaren in the summer. Lots of transfer business occurs as Sissoko, Tiote and Cisse all leave and a major rebuild is required. With so many new, foreign players struggling to adapt to the league, Newcastle start the season inauspiciously and are15th at the end of September. The southern media are very keen to push the narrative 'Nice man Pardew proves feral Geordies wrong', and are scathing in their indictment of McClaren, billing it as a nightmare start. Realizing he has walked into a mess, McClaren resigns, citing differences with Ashley and Charnley. John Carver is placed in temporary charge while the club figure out what to do. While the board dither, Newcastle's form plunges and they slip into the relegation zone. A cheap, short-term fire fighter is placed in charge until the end of the season. Newcastle's form continues to flatline, with players morale ground out by the turmoil, and some angling for moves away. Janmaat and Cabella leave in January leading to more upheaval. Newcastle are eventually relegated on the last day of the season after a home defeat to Alan Pardew's Crystal Palace. Pardew, incidentally, is given the England job, after heroically guiding Palace to a 15th placed finish, despite selling Bolasie and having a fixture moved because of the Notting Hill carnival. Repeating many of his earlier answers, McClaren also made a new claim, that he turned down the job of Newcastle United manager in January, following the departure of Alan Pardew. When quizzed about NUFC, earlier in the day McClaren had said only "that there was an interest in December and January. We talked about that (in press conferences) and in the end they didn't have a manager then." There was no mention of the job offer at that stage and press interviews from back in January include quotes calling interest from NUFC "pure speculation" and that "I've heard nothing" about a job offer from SJP.
