Newcastle 1 - 1 Middlesbrough - 03/02/08 - Post match reaction from page 15

I was surprised at how good Boro were. They put together some nice passing moves and looked dangerous on the counter.

Aside from not having a striker who can actually score goals, Boro really are a team superior to us in every aspect. (Well, maybe not Schwarzer. Worst goalie in the Premiership IMO)

Any one of Wheater, Huth, Rochemback, Arca, Downing would walk straight into our team.

Arca would have been a canny winter buy, actually.

Agree besides Rochenback, hes a complete donkey!

He's a pretty decent player who has a lot of suspect patches. Their version of Emre. Would still have him over Butt or Smith in midfield.

Am I the only one who thought Barton was good today, by the way? Showed some great vision, put in a fair few really good tackles. He's no winger though, and looked much more comfortable when he moved into the middle. Set up two very good goal-scoring opportunities as well

Nope, I thought he was our best player today.

Barton was very good in the middle. But he needs an extended run in the team to truly be comfortable in that position. You can understand why that might not necesarily happen.

On a positive note, quite impressed with Owen today. Looked good, got involved more than he has done of late, looked hungry and created a few chances (Scoring three of them, having two disallowed).

Without jynxing it, could we be seeing a welcome return to this so-called 'great player'?

People going on about how good Boro were today?

If they had a striker they would be in the top half. They play the ball around well and are miles are ahead of us.

No Mido, no Alves, no Tuncay, no Boateng?!!!!!! and they did that too us?!!!!

With a light weight striker upfront alone.

Southgate messed up today. If they had come to play from the beginning they would have probably beat us.

Hold on, they're superior to us in every way because they have 5 players who would get into our team in your opinion?..  Don't you realise that means we have 6 players who would get into there team?  mackems.gif

Given 5

Carr - 5

Taylor 6

Cacapa - 5

N'Zogbia - 6

Barton - 6

Butt - 4

Emre - 6

Duff - 6

Owen - 7

Smith - 5

Viduka and Milner did fuck all.

Smith had another awful game but at least he gives us strength and movement up front that we missed when he went off. also missed emre's movement and quick passing late on which led to boro constantly going at us late on and our inability to slow it down or knock the ball about. also felt Emre's delivery was spot on today. Cacapa was a bit dodgy, some of his passing was a joke, but he also made a goal saving tackle in the 2nd half. taylor was a bit more comfortable. Carr did well in the first half i thought but he's basically a championship player out of his depth and it showed in the 2nd. Best player was Owen by a mile and even his general play was shocking for large parts of the game. scored two good goals, one of which was ruled out. also had some other chances which is promising as he wasn't making many opportunities for himself a few games ago.

We were poor today, the loss of the African lads is huge, out of shape completely, we didn't deserve to win.

You have to be joking, (not re: loss of Africans), if you call that poor relative to the dross we watched under Allardyce.

Course it was poor, the fact we tried passing it on the ground doesn't make it any better than under Allardyce.

Is it worth giving a couple of our youngsters a run in the side? We lacked pace and movement today and despite KK's rhetoric, a fat lot of good the so-called 'experience' of Butt and Smith did us.

Youngsters have to start somewhere, is this the time to do it?

Aye, these players really are shit. You can tell they've been instructed to knock the ball about and pass the ball out from defence but they can't do it.

tbf to Keegan, not even Jesus Christ could get this team playing.

I believe that sums up the mood of the entire football club from the boardroom to the fans.

The midfield lacked pace or athleticism. Take Butt out and replace with Faye and I think we'd have looked a lot better. Duff looked lively but was isolated because geriatrics like Butt couldn't keep up.

Given - 6.5 -  Some vital stops. Communication still lacking with the back four and some dodgy kicking.

Carr - 6  Supported well, outmuscled for the goal but that wasnt a suprise.

Cacapa - 5  Was at sixes and sevens alot, although put in some great interceptions. Communication, positioning and decison making was dodgy for the most part.

Taylor - 5  Average game, didnt do a whole lot wrong, lacks communication with the rest of the back four

N'Zogbia - 7 (attacking) 3 (defending) - Had a great game attacking, where he should be but he leaves to many gaps. we need a LB

Butt - 2    Short of scoring another couple of own goals and getting himself sent off he couldnt have played much worse. Dallies on the ball, possibly our worst passer, cant retain the ball,  for a Defensive midfielder its unnaceptable.

Emre - 6 - Missing that fitness so not quite on the ball, sat way too deep, but needed to the way butt was playing. Hope the hamstring injury doesnt put him out another 3 months.

Duff - 8 -  Our best player this year, we need enrique back so we can play him on the right with N'zog on the left.

Barton - 7 -  Generous marks but he battled well, used the ball neatly, like emre is off the pace fitness wise and sat too deep in the first half. He did however play with his brain today, if not subdued. Looks much better in the centre naturally.

Smith - 3 -  Why? what are you here for? why do you exist?

Owen - 7 -  Like the majority lacking major confidence, should have had a hatrick today. Was a different player after the goal.

Viduka - 5 - If its not confidence its fucking fitness that lacking, (or talent in a few players cases) Didnt do to bad but he would have buried a couple of chances had he been fit, oh how we need him fit.

Milner - 5 -  Didnt do much right or wrong.

Officials - 3 -  need not comment.

quote of the day: "Its not just love that changes everything, its goals too."
