Coloccini expects Depor stay

Deportivo La Coruña confirm amazing U-turn

Last updated: 4th August 2008

Newcastle United have been stunned as their latest transfer target slipped through their grasp.

Fabricio Coloccini was expected on Tyneside for a medical on Monday evening, however it would appear he never made the flight back with the Magpies squad.

It is thought the lure of a new lucrative contract at the Spanish outfit has persuaded him to stay in La Liga for the time being.

Depor president Augusto César Lendoiro confirmed the news. He said "Fabricio will stay with us now."

"The offer from Newcastle was a good one, Deportivo can now match this offer"

Coloccini will become the latest transfer target Kevin Keegan has missed out on this summer offer after Luka Modrić and Pablo Aimar.

No sooner do United return from friendly tournament action in Spain than it's claimed that we're in the process of committing to another similar event at some point.

The local media in La Coruna have published details of the deal that will see defender Fabricio Coloccini move from Deportivo to Newcastle - including an agreement for the Magpies to appear in a pre-season event.

A fee of €11.5M plus appearance-related add-ons worth up to €2.5M and a small sell-on clause are mentioned, with the player expected in England in the immediate future.

As part of transfer, United are said to be lined up as one of the sides to play in a future Teresa Herrera Tournament - an annual event held at Deportivo's Riazor Stadium.

La Coruna is in the province of Galicia, which lies up in the

northwest corner of Spain. United's 2005 Intertoto Cup game at that venue saw them backed by around 45 fans - partly due to the lack of direct flights from the UK.
