We've conceded the least in the league because we have the 3 best defenders and the best keeper in the league. The long ball tactics do nowt but f*** up our possession and invite pressure.

 

I don't understand why you think we will play better if we keep the ball on the ground. Every time we have the ball at the back our midfield is cluless no one wants to move into space to start an attack. We play long ball because we play 'better' when employing the tactic. If we had a better manager who drilled the players properly I've no doubt we could start playing a short passing game but we have Hughton and we have to make do with what we have.

 

I also wouldn;t mind seeing Lovenkrands being given a shot upfront with one either Ranger or Carroll at some point.

I should have been more clear, I meant that its fair enough that Harper may be reluctant to play it out to the back 4 minus Enrique, and likewise they might be a bit reluctant about receiving it, but I'd still like to see it played out more, and hope that it'll happen more when the back 4 includes Taylor and Colo. Does that make more sense?

Nile showed how the game should be played, but the booing was strange... there was a cheer went up when Hughton called Nile back from warming up no idea who he was going to replace at that point, then cheering a clapping at the decision, then all of a sudden booing, dunno if Harewood reacted badly to be subbed and that was why the booing started. My nephew said "ne need to boo him like" and I agree but did he show some sort of decent? as he did at Forest when he was taken off.

 

Harewood was shit, one shot at goal and that was blocked, did not close down did not chase the ball was jjust a waste of a starting place.

Nile scored in a friendly against Celtic today.

 

NILE Ranger netted his first of the season for Newcastle United Reserves as Celtic stole a late 3-2 victory during an entertaining behind-closed-doors friendly at Benton.

 

The 18-year-old came from the bench for United's first team on Saturday to help spark the comeback which saw Chris Hughton's men claim a last-gasp 2-1 triumph against Doncaster Rovers.

 

And Ranger was included in a strong Magpie second-string alongside Tim Krul, Geremi and Kazenga LuaLua for Tuesday's visit of The Bhoys.

Dutch stopper Krul, enjoying his first United run out since last month's Carling Cup defeat at Peterborough, was called into action as early as the 4th minute when he beat clear Paul McGowan's well-struck effort from just inside the area.

 

But it was Alan Thompson's side who drew first blood, Geordie teenager Ryan Donaldson applying a cool finish to Ranger's cushioned header on 23 minutes.

 

That advantage lasted less than two minutes and the Scots restored parity when a slick forward move involving Willo Flood and Marc-Antoine Fortune was rounded off by McGowan's composed, close-range finish.

 

And by the half-hour mark Neil Lennon's men were in front, Ryan Conroy taking advantage of the greasy surface to skid a low 20-yard drive beyond Krul and inside the base of the post.

 

Just as the hosts had surrendered their lead within a matter of minutes, so too did the visitors.

 

Ranger, the grateful recipient of a high punt into the Celtic danger zone, was left with the simplest of tasks in skipping around Italian stopper Daniele Giordano before rolling into the empty target.

 

Ranger then shaved a post and Krul saved bravely from Koki Mizuno before an enthralling first period was brought to a close.

 

Frank Danquah went close for the Geordies after half-time with a low effort from distance and Ole Soderberg, on for Krul, denied McGowan from point-blank range.

Hands off Nile Ranger says Hughton

CHRIS HUGHTON has warned would-be January bidders for Nile Ranger that the teenage striker's future is on Tyneside.

 

The 18-year-old has impressed this season – and the Chronicle understands that big-spending Manchester City are monitoring the England Under-19’s progress this season, despite the fact he is yet to net a senior goal for the Magpies.

 

Hughton is desperate to keep Ranger’s feet on the ground this season and regards him as an important player for the future at St James’s Park.

 

Hughton, who must decide whether to hand Ranger a start against Sheffield United on Monday night, told the Chronicle: “It’s normal that people talk about players being linked with clubs on the football circuit.

 

“I know of no official approach from anybody about Nile so far.

 

“Nile’s a young lad who is learning all of the time and his future is here.

 

“During his time with the first team this season he has been making good contributions.

 

“But he is still very young. He is making progress and it’s very much a case of learning his trade.

 

“Last season he did ever so well in the reserves and subsequently ended up with the first-team group.

 

“He’s worked his way up to the first team and he’s here on merit.”

 

Ranger has been in and out of Hughton’s side this season, but many Toon fans prefer to see youth given its chance in the shape of Andy Carroll and Ranger in attack as opposed to on-loan striker Marlon Harewood.

 

However, Hughton feels that all of his strikers know the score when it comes to his selection process and only those in form will get the nod.

 

Hughton said: “There will always be ups and downs once you get here.

 

“And there will be times when any player’s form is not so good.”

 

Yet Hughton expects Ranger to get better as the season progresses. He added: “He’s had a consistent run of games and, apart from a bout of illness, he’s been injury-free this season.

 

“He’ll get better as he gets more experienced and it’s good for him that he can be part of the squad.”
