Not to go poking the wasps nest here, but what evidence do we have that Ashley is being unreasonable? Isn't it possible that the bidders are themselves trying to negotiate the best deal possible and won't meet his evaluation?

 

Again, I'm not saying this is what I think, just putting it out there as a possibility as I haven't seen any evidence that Ashley is being more of a dick than usual.

 

Lack of communication between board and players to the extent that the players have now broken ranks shows unreasonableness of boardroom. Unwillingness to appoint Shearer despite everyone wanting him is unreasonable.

 

Can't or shouldn't appoint a new permanent manager while the club is trying to get sold.

 

If the new owner didn't want that manager and/or had their own guy earmarked then that would just be another extra expense to fork out to pay him off.

 

Could be a deal-breaker.

Shearer is special case, says boss McMenemy

LAWRIE McMENEMY has dismissed suggestions that Alan Shearer needs to serve his apprenticeship in football before being re-handed the reins at St James’s Park.

 

The former England assistant manager and Northern Ireland gaffer is deeply concerned with the situation at Newcastle, and feels Shearer needs to be brought in as soon as possible if United are to avoid a further drop into League One and play third-tier soccer for the first time ever.

 

McMenemy was in the region in his role as ambassador for the Special Olympics on the Torch Run, which stopped off at Newcastle on the latest leg of their national tour.

 

He told the Chronicle today: “I may sound like an old timer here.

 

“But the old rule was that you served your apprenticeship elsewhere.

 

“That was the case for Bobby Robson at Fulham, for me at Doncaster and for Brian Clough at Hartlepool. It doesn’t do you any harm.

 

“But Alan is different. His knowledge of this club is better than most others in the managerial network at the minute.

 

“He can also command the respect of both the players and the fans – who listen to him.

 

“He didn’t give the impression when he came in he was doing it as a favour for anybody else, he was doing it because he loved the club.”

 

McMenemy admits he’s had a summer of anxiety after watching two clubs close to his heart go through the mire.

 

The man who won the 1976 FA Cup for Southampton said: “It was the same at Southampton the other week. They were in a similar predicament.

 

“Last season they called me in to whip up the crowd for the last few games of the season.

 

“It was a mess but they put their cards on the table and they said ‘we’re in trouble.’

 

“So it can take time and it will be painful – players will go.

 

“The thing is at least Southampton are now sorted out. There are only three weeks to go until the new season starts.

 

“And for Newcastle, it’s all still in the air. Newcastle are such a big club as well.

 

“Because of what I have been doing with the Special Olympics, I bumped into Tony Blair the other week.

 

“I’m not name checking, but the first thing he said to me was ‘what on earth is going on up at Newcastle, Big Lawrie?’

 

“That’s how much this club means to not only the people in Newcastle, but everybody around us – they have world-wide support.

 

“Everybody is asking one question ‘who is going to buy Newcastle United?’ ”

 

And he forecasts a tough season for the Magpies, despite their tag as bookies’ favourites to win the Championship.

 

He said: “I’ve managed over 800 matches in all four divisions – and the Second Division in my day was always the hardest.

 

“It’s not easy and Southampton will tell you that.

 

“There are a number of clubs who won’t get up or go down – but they will make life very difficult for you.

 

“And I’m not the first to say that Newcastle will be everybody’s cup final.

 

“They need to get sorted and they need a proper manager.

 

“The players also have a responsibility too. They are the ones who got Newcastle into this mess.

 

“They have to get the club back up there, there is no divine right and they have to fight for that right.”

 

THE Special Olympics Great Britain torch run is taking place between until July 25, and started at Much Wenlock, home of the Modern Olympic Games.

 

British police forces are escorting the Special Olympics torch ‘Flame of Hope’ on a nationwide tour to the opening ceremony of Special Olympics National Summer Games in Leicester.

 

Newcastle is the second leg of the nationwide torch run, which will see the Special Olympics Flame of Hope travel through 45 towns and cities.

 

A total of 188 athletes from the region will be taking part in the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games.

 

National Grid volunteers in Newcastle support Special Olympics Great Britain in a number of ways, from fundraising, to coaching, to organising events

 

Special Olympics Great Britain is a charity, providing year-round sports training and competition to children and adults with learning disabilities, and is recognised as the third member of the Olympic family and is a separate organisation to the Paralympics.

 

The games will attract over 2,700 athletes representing 19 Special Olympics regions across the UK, 1,200 coaches, 1,500 volunteers and 6,000 families to Leicestershire for a week of Olympic-style sports competitions.

If that happens that really would be the straw that broke the camels back for me, I just don't think I could deal with this club anymore. I'd just stop caring. Don't get me wrong I'd still support us, but I would just find it hard to be upset or surprised by any more of the inevitable shit that is going to come our way.

I agree. Friend of mine saw him at Newcastle Airport a few weeks back and whilst he acknowledged him when he said hello, he blanked him as soon as he mentioned takeover. I still have this faint hope that Alan knows more than he is letting on
