Obafemi Martins joins Wolfsburg for £9m

Can't believe there is 4 pages on this thread with people arguing that he should stay.

When will people start to get it into there heads that we are now in the championship and even if players like Martins, Duff and Smith say they want to stop the simple fact is THEY CAN'T.  It is impossible for the club to keep them, even if we want too.

If these players are so in love with the club like they say, lets see there actions instead,  drop your wages to £10k (even that is probably more than we can afford) and PROVE you want to stay cos you love the club and city.

Would love for us to go into the next season with Martins, Xisco, and Rangerd.  We could do some real damage.

Regarding Martins and Xisco I agree with this, both would score goals for fun in that league imho

He should have worked harder to keep us in the Premiership so that the gravy train kept going.  Too late now.

Sorry Oba, but getting shot of mediocre players on Champions League wages is one of the few bonuses of getting relegated.  Good luck finding a mid table club with the money to afford you, or have fun in Dubai or Japan.

I'll always remember the key chances Oba missed in the final few games.

Yep i know it was more than just his fault, but when we were struggling to scores goals, the best chances were falling to our "100m in 11 seconds" man and he couldnt finish fuck all. One of them goes in, and we are still in the PL.

I want to stay - FUCK YOU, GREEDY CUNT

I want to leave - FUCK YOU, DISLOYAL CUNT

Here's an explanation for you, and it includes why Habib Beye doesn't get called a cunt and won't get called a cunt.

If someone has given everything they have for the club, been a true pro at all times and genuinely cares that we've gone down they'll be well received by the fans.

If they didn't seem to give a fuck, feigned injury so they didn't have to play in Stoke, missed a number of chances that could have kept us up and didn't seem particularly fucked that we went down, they'll probably get called a cunt whatever they say in hindsight.

Those reasons are Oba-specialised, but they can be adapted to fit the vast majority of the team.

If we are going to gear up for a long stay in the championship, then yes, it is impossible.

More to the point, what we can afford will depend on who our new owners are.

best player at the club so naturally i'd like him to stay, but we need to cut the wage bill and make some money and his departure would help on both these counts. on the other hand our preparations for this season aren't shaping up too well and we could enter a downward spiral of players leaving and none coming in to replace them. so with that in mind i am warm to the idea that we treat this like a one-year hiatus from the premiership, keep our best players regardless of wages and try to get back into the premiership at the very first opportunity. missing out on promotion would damage our finances more than keeping the likes of Martins imo.

also think thomas nails it on the head, some people will have a go at oba no matter what, even though he played through the pain barrier for us at the end, bagged the goal that gave us a brief bit of light at the tail end of the season, and has intimated that he would be prepared to stay. the mind boggles.

Fuck Martins and the rest of them n all. It's those cowardly wanks who got us in this position and we need a year zero approach, a fresh start, new faces from top to bottom. If it takes us a few years to get back to where we were so be it. That shower of shite who wore our colours last season would be lucky to finish mid-table in the CC. Bunch of fucks.

I suppose thats easier for you to say, since I won't be able to watch most of our matches from where I am.

It was patently obvious that Oba was seriously struggling with a hernia problem before and after Stoke to be fair. He was probably only able to play at about 80% of his capability in our run in, and there's no doubt that if he was fully fit and motivated he would score plenty in the Championship.

The question is can we afford to keep him, and the answer will depend on if and when we get a new owner and manager and what their thoughts are. If Shearer eventually gets the job I think Oba will be shown the door.

We can probably afford to keep one high earner on. Hopefully that will be Obafemi Martins but it'll probably end up being Damien Duff or Alan Smith, someone who we can't shift or we'll still have to contribute to their wages after they've moved on.

Basically all our high earners are going to need moving on which will include Oba. The fact is he will probably fetch the highest fee of all our strikers which gives a true reflection of his worth regardless of people's opinions here or anywhere else. He's our best striker and he will need replacing.

Please note when I say he is our best striker I don't mean he can finish like Torres or is in the same class as Tevez or Berbatov....just that he is our best striker as opposed to Shola or Xisco. I haven't included players who are out the door like owen or Viduka but for the record I think he's better than them as well because both are busted flushes.

If it's affordable to keep him next season under new owners then great, keep him.

It wouldn't be an affordable wage in the Championship regardless of who the owner is tbh.

The oba bashing is really unwarranted imo. Sure he looks lazy on a few occasions but isn't that just his style. He's the only player in our whole 25+ squad with real explosive ability.

Aye, and what an effect it had on our season  O0

What I mean is, if in the unlikely event we get a new owner and says they don't have to offload anybody, then he's not one I'd be actively looking to sell.

I agree, I think he could be lethal in the C'ship, with some new strikers around him and far more opportunities to score.

He's got to stay, imo and he wants to :)

just wish we'd be sold already, total nightmare happening as usual

I love how Oba and the word "explosive" get mentioned together so often.

He's about as explosive as a ten year old soggy sparkler.

True - but he has the capability to be "explosive" with some decent providers.
