Robbie Rogers: being gay meant I had to give up football

Quitting football was nothing to do with the persistent injuries then.  They were a meager irritant to him, no doubt.

Possibly true, but the complete lack of out gay footballers is kinda damning about how accepted it would be.

He didn't have persistent injuries. Not looking at his history anyway, seemed to play pretty much full seasons in the MLS and then just didn't get a game at Leeds.

Edit: he had an ankle injury. Still, seems a bit churlish to try and question his motivations for retirement.

Err, probably, yeah

Injuries would be irritating to any footballer but I don't think many would throw in the towel at 25 without really giving it crack at getting fit again. Hopefully he changes his mind and someone signs him up in the future.

I think John Fashanu's experience has had some impact, I think it'll take some very high profile player to come out before anything else will be achieved.

Aye, presenting Gladiators he must have seen homophobic abuse towards some of the shitter contestants every day. Sad.

Perma-crock Abou Diaby's leg has fallen off again. Out for 9 months.

Proper s*** that for Arsenal. He's not their best midfielder, but they look so much worse without him. Diaby-Wilshere-Cazorla is a great midfield three. Two of them spend most of their time on the treatment table though.

Probably because he provides drive, balance and physicality. Something that is poorly missing otherwise.

Wilshere and Cazorla are great footballers but it seems imbalanced and lacking in a number of things, Diaby provides those things.

I wonder if Arsene will finally give up on him and actually look for someone long term who could provide what he provides except not injured all the time.

He really has to stop being so loyal to his players.

Sure I read somewhere that unsurprisingly they've been linked with Capoue.

I just don't get why there's still so much stigma attached to it in football. Not as if football's the sport of a man's man anymore, if it ever was.

I suppose the whole sharing the dressing room and all that will add to the pressure. I don't think it's just football, are really many openly gay men in other team sports?

Bellamy had a son when he was 17? Didn't know that.

Nice to see his son and Speed's son play together for the Welsh under 16's :aww:

Had two kids at the age of 19, I think.

Mental that
