And, I'd back Shearer all the way and forever, but I also kind of see where Keane is coming from The comparison was with Kane though. Was it not sneaky the way that Kane would back into defenders and bend over making them go flying over the top of him? We could all see what he was doing for a long time. That's what initiated the debate, but then Keane went on a clearly emotion driven rant about how Shearer was just a "sneaky', elbowing bastard irrespective and with no comparison to anyone else. Edit: actually, he did compare to Cole and Cantona... Edited September 26, 2025 by M4
Keggy_Keagal
Keane's not wrong. Shearer didn't mind a sneaky foul. Roy was a fantastic player but subtlety wasn't his strongest quality. I suspect with Keane and Shearer that it's one of those situations where they're quite alike and that's what causes the clash.

Absolutely. And that they would therefore have got on brilliantly had they been on the same team.

Shearer never moves a muscle, nor loses eye contact, yet somehow Keane couldnt make it to him. Where's that clip of him stamping on that Crystal Palace player... (whilst I do appreciate that the challenge on him was a shocker) It was Southgate so I'll let him off. 😂
andycap
Back in them days Adams Keown hendry ruddock etc used to kick lumps out of you and stamp on people's feet dodgy elbows if they could get away with it they done it. To be a top striker you had to be able to give a bit aswell.

I always thought that Shearer gave as good as he got, and that if the odd referee did pander to him as England's star striker it was just as common for an official to come up to St James' Park and give him nothing as if to show that they wouldn't be influenced or overawed by the crowd. You needed to be combative as a striker back then and plenty of players had an edge. Ian Wright who is well liked today had a particular nasty streak of a type which only emerged from Shearer on the odd occasion. For me the lack of elbows, stamps and all-out brawls following reckless tackles is to the detriment of the game, especially today in front of a divided populace which yearns for violence. There's a lot to bemoan about today's version of football but at the very least the players could pretend they aren't friends, orchestrate a few fist fights and ideally give us the pleasure of watching on as the odd overhyped prospect has their career devastated by injuries. One of the most aggressive, horrible and violent players of my generation. Moaning about Shearer for some ‘sneaky’ elbows. How do people manage to watch or listen to that cunt. If someone disagrees, he responds and argues back like a child. Gets all sarcy, rolls his eyes and does a silly voice to try and mock the other person That Jill Scott is also intolerable. Total try-hard.

As for his substitutions, fucking hell. Not the messiah many (including myself) thought he would be. Saying that, I don't want rid of him, it's a massive rebuild project and I think he'll take us up next season (if not via the playoffs this season). Ronaldo
I really want to hate Jill Scott based on her airbrained / banal nonsense in that format but she owns a coffee shop round the corner from us and she’s absolutely one of the loveliest people you could meet. Shearer seems to live rent free in Keane’s head. For some reason he hasn’t matured past that particular hostility. Weird.

Kid Icarus
Neville's absolutely right, Shearer was tough and could be nasty, he didn't really shy away from it so how he was sneaky I'm not sure. He definitely got the same England privilege that the likes of Kane and Rooney got for being dirty though. bobbydazzla
Was just thinking last night when watching Barry celebrating his goal like a berk with a dance, pulling a confused face and firing a bow and arrow, how did goal celebrations become elaborate youth theatre performances. And my memories were cast back to how class it was when a "trademark" celebration was just Shearer running along with a big grin and one hand up above his head.
